Nparks did a wonderful job here with some white-fragrant orchids, pigeon orchid/dendrobium crumenatum blooming on this tree. Delicate flowers from the Putat laut/Barringtonia asiatica tree on the ground. Couple taking their wedding pix on the sandy playground and if only they know how to balance their marriage relationship on this see-saw so as both can balance and not fall! Fri: bus to meet up at ParkRoyal on Pickering, my favourite hotel in this area. Drama on the bus with this nasty guy shouting rude and unnecessary insults at the driver!!! Hats off to the driver who stopped the bus and told this rude person to get off if he did not shut-up. It worked.

While Ivy&May were shopping, Lock&I learnt something new and interesting about why Trengganu St was known as Japanese St in the early 1900s.

Chinatown Heritage Centre*****highly recommended. Time and money (FOC for me) well-spent to learn about life of the SIN early pioneers and discover the personal stories of people who made Chinatown their home in this restored shop-houses displaying living spaces, furnishings & artifacts of early Chinatown settlers. Was there some time ago before the renovations.

8 Nov 2017 – Why I HATE Travelling!!!

Sun: wow, if this was my boarding school, I would do very well! Not many students are around on Sun as they go home, but just look at this breakfast-spread (for staff, students and visitors like me!), smoked salmon, omelette, egg, bacon, sausages, etc…

A walk about in the common areas. Would certainly not mind being a student or a teacher again in a place like this 🙂

Amazing fresh (literally) seafood selection.

Even their traditional Italian pizzas here are freshly-made to go, and the owner of this location, Jenny Wang in green is here personally to check on her investments! Tasted several samples of toppings and they are good, but the eyes are always wider than the stomach and after breakfast, pizza was not on the list before flying!

What a wonderful way to end this visit at this grocery shop with a florist by an alley of weeping willows. Thank you Audrey&her TEDx Team for a memorable visit.

7 Nov 2017 – Tourist For One Day

Mon: uneventful flight from SIN. Landed on time in PEK after 6+hrs of flying but taxing to the gate took nearly an hour + another 1+hr thru immigration to baggage claim and a slow-train to the arr terminal. Poor Audrey who was meeting me had to wait for 2hrs.

It was dark by the time we got to Keystone Academy, Shunyi District which was not too far from the airport but heavy traffic made it seem further.

Tue: an early start with my own private charming  driver/Jeff and car (800¥ S$164 for the day) driving thru[ country-side to the Mutianyu Great Wall, Huairou County,  70k from the city, but shorter from where I was at the school, getting there by 0900hrs.

Amazing how beautiful and pleasant it was without too much of a crowd, the glorious weather helped. Was thoroughly awe with this most impressive architectural man-made monument in history.

Well restored for this section and breath-taking views. Cable car took me to Tower 14, beautifully restored and can see to the far above towers. Tower23 would give a panoramic view but also read that it is really steep to get up there – 450steps, perhaps another time?  Further beyond that is not restored not is it open to the public.

Walked from Tower 14-15 and back.  Very blessed for the short quiet stroll in this glorious weather on the wall.

Would have walked up here if only time was on my side. And no it is not the AT even when it seems like a White-Blaze is marked on stair-case – they are lights on the path for walking up to the wall. Cable-car or maybe be carried up like this person is the way to go today 🙂

From the shuttle bus back to the car, guards picking pears and got to taste it – yummy. Vendors selling delicious sweet persimmons+other fresh fruits, warm roasted chestnuts,  – bought a bit of everything 55¥ S$11.

Well- worth 180¥ S$37 for the RT shuttle bus, cable car, entrance to both the Stone and Cultural Treasures Exhibitions. Another item on my bucket list done 🙂

The pix say it all regarding the air-quality and the traffic into the city. Was told by Jeff that the air is pretty good!!

Forbidden City – now Palace Museum served as the home for 24emperors and is the ceremonial&political centre of Chinese government for nearly 500yrs. It is the largest and best preserved collection of ancient buildings in China and the largest palace complex in the world.

Panic in the Forbidden City – could only exit by the sides or the back. Memories of a movie scene from the Last Emperor movie came to mind when the mother of the boy Emperor was taken away from him when he tried to chase after but only to be stop by the guards. What a desperate helpless feeling of being trapped.

After getting in, realized that time was not on my side as the drive was meeting me near the front and there was absolutely NO parking there. Bought lunch 25¥ S$5 but no time to eat – doggie bagged it. Managed to find my way out by paying (1.50¥) to go thru’ the gardens, tkx to the police and some kind bilingual lady. It was too crowded for me to appreciated this location.

Wed: finally the chance to explore around in daylight this 5*school – Keystone Academy. Interesting layout of this campus with a modern designed Performing Arts Centre surrounded by the traditional red-brick buildings in a more conventional style.

Appreciations to Audrey for putting me up in the Residential West Building – such luxury, 3bed-rooms apt with a view when not too hazy!

While waiting for Justin to take me out for lunch, my first thought at distance – this cannot be litter as the school grounds are sparklessly clean and this was just outside the school wall. These white leafs are new to me! The small cute vehicles were park on the pavement are also new to me!!

Yummy fish lunch and tasty soup with noodles+the condiments which were added into the soup when it was pipping hot.

There is even a SIN food place in this location! Tkx to Justin for being such a wonderful lunch guide.

Learning from the TEDx Team at the set-up and 1st rehearsal.

PEK duck dinner, tkx to Justin. Here in PEK they eat it differently from SIN. The skin is dipped in some sauce or sugar as a starter bite followed by the meat wrapped in the pancake with the condiments and sauce.

Thu: after good constructive feed-backs from Audrey, editing talk and added more pix of the AT – 2nd rehearsal. Bought some take-away food across the road from the school, too spicy oily, but the portion for 2 was big enough to feed even my family! Tasted some sushi and KFC from the students which was way better!!

Fri: chat with Kamani who arr from London this early morning. Lunch@the school canteen – its sure is better food than the take away from across the road last night. Final rehearsal. Dinner@Shine Hill Mall under a full moon. Best stir-fired cauliflower tasted.

Sat: up bright and early to get outfit ready. Entrance to the talk nicely done, watching this maze take shape as the hard-working students kept at it the past few days and now glad that things are going smoothly for ppl to find their way thru’ this maze!

Fun to mingle and chatting with the speakers and audience in between refreshments and lunch supplied by the school.

Was touched by the gift – a black hoodie-sweat. Appreciations to the Keystone Academy and the TEDx Team for a job well-done and many tkx to Audrey for the invite to speak on Off The Beaten Path. Also tkx to Gel for the intro video and to Leonard for pix set-up.

Fri: still searching for pix. TGIF. Happy 93Bday to Ellen, the best grandmother for my 2children&the best great-grandmother for my 6grandchildren. Pix from 1960s-2000s.

How is it possible that she was in her 40s when we first met? That is the age my first-born is now! Where has all the time gone?? I find myself asking this question more than others!! Time has a tendency to play tricks on us as the years go by.

Sat: can you guess what this pix is – here is bigger pix. Like in life, some things are not what they seem to be until the whole pix is revealed. Was just meditating when this image caught my eyes again and it has happened some time ago. Not sure why only now did I decide to take a pix of it??

Am sooo proud of my first-born Coach Linn Hall and #1&#2+friends who made it to States for XC. What an achievement. Congratulations and will be keeping my fingers crossed for them and myself this coming Sat 4Nov when I will be in PEK giving the TEDx talk.

Sun: early morning walk on EC Pk with Clement, this time round walking towards the airport instead of the direction to the Gardens By The Bay. Stopped for a cuppa and a bowl of MeeSiam breakfast@EastCoast Food Village. Forgot the camera on the bench, thank goodness it was early and was still there when I turned back to find it.

This must win the most unusual race – The Urgent Run!! with a row of portable Johnny by the path…

A good climbing tree! Has been awhile since being on the Bedok Jetty, many ppl out fishing this morning.

Spotted some ppl far out paddle boarding and was trying to get nearer to take a pix.  What are the chances of bumping into a nephew from London when taking an early Sunday morning walk with another nephew SIN?? Welcome back to SIN Andrew, did not even know that he is here visiting!

Last minute shopping at the airport (saving 7%GST) before flying off tomorrow. Not sure how much access of FB, Hotmail or WordPress there will be in China, so if no words, just means limited or no access. An early Happy Halloween to all celebrating.

Mon: tkx for lunch with Pat&Peggy who is preparing for her WOC to be held in Ecuador and her trip to Peru after the WOC. Looking forward to seeing her pix and hearing about her trip.

Tue: appreciations to Leonard for checking the laptop as it has been scaring me with a black screen occasionally! Had a surprise inquiry from KwongLeeBank/1 posting from Roger. Passed on the messages and info to the others who have more seniority than I have to handle this. This is regarding 14Uncle Danny LAM TinChong who was married a couple of times but has no children. Pix credits to Roger.

My father in law is the chairperson of the SamChingKong old folks home in Hulu Langat. MrLam was brought in by his so called secretary who has been living with him for 30years, but lately when we tried to contact him, the no is no longer reachable. My father in law has been talking to him and he has some memories about his relatives that stays in Singapore and he misses them. So by just luck that he gave us a few hints like KwongLeeBank, his dad’s name. We saw your blog, I ll attach his IC to u ya. Hope u can let us know what’s his life story.

Wed: checking out pix to use for the TEDx talk and got caught into a web of memories!! One pix for every decade starting 1950s with my parents and siblings@5Temenggong Rd, 1960s – somewhere in Ireland and it is the only pix of me I have from my boarding school days.

1970s – Skittenelv/Troms, Norway pulling May (6-7months) in the sleigh. Those were the days (nearly 40yrs ago!) when I could still pull my baby in the sleigh on ski trips 🙂 1980s – TN/USA en route moving from CA-FL. 1990s – welcome Jeff into the family – Casselberry/FL, USA.

2006 – Pat&David’s wedding with #3, the only one of my grandchildren born in SIN. 2014 – Linn’s 40Bday, one of the best day of my life with the whole family together – only shot of my whole immediate family with me in Boston,MA/USA.

Quite amazing – would like to visit this when completed in 2019, a perfect treat to myself if I survive till then! Wonder if it will be like being in a submarine??  Watching the quiet underwater realm in a big aquarium is exceptionally calming and hypnotizing for me. Above 3pix downloaded from below link.
