Welcome Norway’s PM Erna Solberg

14 Apr 2016 – To SIN
Tue: valid view-points from all sides but still sad and disappointing that it has come to this. Both LKY&his wife would probably feel the same if they could feel and they certainly do not deserve this 🙁 May they RIP.

Tue is senior-day-discount (3%) at Giant. Prefer to shop at my local wet-market but needed dill and that is not available at the wet-markets. Best to be at the grocery store when it opens at 0900hrs to beat the crowds. And since I am there, might as well get the rest of my grocery for the next few days. Had only one choice of dill, but one is better than none!

Tkx for dinner with sis Jo&family.

Norway and Singapore enjoy good economic relations, especially in the maritime sector. Our ties go back more than a century. Norway established an honorary consulate here in 1906, soon after it became independent. As PM Solberg told me, the right to establish its own consulates overseas was the final issue which led Norway to dissolve its union with Sweden in 1905 and become an independent country.

During her visit, PM Solberg spoke at the 6th Norway-Asia Business Summit, and gave a public lecture at The International Institute for Strategic Studies Asia (IISS Asia) – Fullerton Lecture Series.

I thanked PM Solberg for Norway’s strong support for Singapore’s participation as an observer in the Arctic Council. Look forward to enhancing the close and longstanding friendship between our countries. – LHL

Hjertelig velkommen statsminister Erna Solberg til Singapore. Vi håper at du vil ha et hyggelig opphold her. Explains why the Norwegian flag was up and on a car when walking by the Fullerton Hotel to get to ACM!

Appreciations to Yoshie for the invite to The Urasenke Chado Tradition at ACM. Daisosho SEN Genshitsu (age 92) showed how to bring the people of Japan and SIN closer and by the same token bring the world a big step closer to achieving peace through the agency of the Way of Tea (chado).

It has been awhile ago since the last visit to ACM and the River Room, feel strange to be back.

Great to catch up with Seb for a late cuppa – the short pouring rain was refreshing and welcoming after a hot oppressive day. Even sat outside at Starbucks on Bras Basah/Waterloo junction under the extended roof to enjoy every moment of it. Starbucks pix and map downloaded…

Merle was all excited seeing the view of MBS. She has seen it on her teacher’s screen-saver and recognized it. Appreciate the time with the Yeos and MeiMei who manged to take a power-nap before a local dinner at Marina Square Food Court with a view.

Edited 14Apr – Words from YatSoon who is the only child from 9auntie: My recent trip to the Far East has made me contemplate my family heritage. I am very proud of my parents who came to the UK in around 1960. Though both from affluent family backgrounds and well educated (although both regretted that their education was interrupted by the war) they went into business, like so many immigrants, through food. They both loved their food and we’re both expert cooks. In the mid 1960’s they ran one of the few Singaporean/Malaysian/Chinese restaurants in London. As a result they catered for the visiting parties of Singaporean/Malaysian dignitaries who regularly visited the UK for governmental discussions regarding the complex political and sovereignty issues of the time. This historical photo from the early 1960’s shows my father with Tunku Abdul Rahman (founding Prime Minister of Malaysia) and Lee Kwan Yew (founding Prime Minister of Singapore) at one such banquet. For those who don’t know who’s who visually, I challenge you to identify the two visionary statesmen and the one humble cook (who also played the cello, loved Italian opera… and ended up quite liking the harpsichord!).

Pix credits of 9uncle with LKY and Tunku Abdul Rahman to YatSoon. Wedding pix form 1957 of 9auntie&uncle with father&mother and me in my collection. Glad to have someone in the family who is interested in his heritage too.

At East Coast Pk to share our tribute to Michael, our parents and ancestors for Tomb Sweeping Day tradition. It is only befitting as Michael connected us when Zarina first moved to SIN. It was indeed a beautiful day for a lovely gesture to our departed loved ones. May they all RIP. Tkx to Zarina for suggesting that we get flowers to throw into the sea.

Mon: appreciations to SY for the company to Mandai Crematorium to pay respects to father and mother for this ChingMing festival. More construction on the way there and good to see these construction workers stretching out before the start of their work day.

The AC Story from my side as the other side has yet to approach me directly!

6Apr – received a note regarding the AC.  Called to inquire about the situation and was told that the neighbour below complained about my AC leaking.

7Apr – 0900hrs Mr Lau from Geylang Branch HDB paid a visit to let me know that I needed to place a tray below the AC compressor to avoid it from leaking to the neighbour downstairs. Informed him that I would prefer to talk to my regular AC service people first in spite of his insistence to get the HDB contractor.

8Apr – visit from my regular AC service people to be informed that yes, it is possible to fix a tray but on the other hand, there is no guarantee that MOE will approve if problems of stagnant water appears, especially in a situation when I am unable to monitor it as I travel quite often.

IMG_0344IMG_0378IMG_0379

Pix of one of the neighbours AC where another solution is possible by placing some water-proof mat on top of the compressor so as the leak or condensation does not fall directly below the neighbour’s compressor. Other pix also show that no other ACs have a tray under the compressors.

11Apr – called Mr Lau to suggest that he talk to the person who complained to him (assuming that it is #06-54 who is also his office staff). He still insisted that the HBD contractors can placed a tray under the compressor. My point is that he is not even willing to suggest to try with an easier alternative and even told me to talk to the neighbour directly.

This is quite unacceptable as the complain went thru’ HDB. Would NOT have any problems talking directly to the person who complained if she directed her issues to me but as it is she made the complain to HDB.

Thank you to Calvin and Yusof for hearing me out…

Appreciations to Simplicius (visiting from Sydney) for dropping by to try out the Yamaha and for dinner at Glory***Walked to the MPCC and was in luck to get this Follow that Rainbow pin for SY, also more luck to stumble upon another Play me I’m Yours – made from balloons of cheerful colours with much hot-air and matching the pin 🙂

Wed:  heading bright and early to NDC to remove stitches. Short and painless appointment by handsome young dentist! They seemed to get younger or rather it is me who is aging – lol

IMG_0287IMG_0289IMG_0288

Amazed at all the constructions going on en route from NDC to Chinatown. Interesting history in these areas that some are not even aware of – the old Outram Prison was once located here!

IMG_0302IMG_0303

Thank you to Daisy for yummy coffee-mocha shaved-iced which helped me with shopping for gifts in Chinatown and kept me going for the rest of the day. Always a delight catching up with Daisy.

IMG_0301IMG_0291IMG_0293

Somehow Chinatown seems always interesting, no matter how many times I have been there. Chinatown Heritage Centre is newly revamped but has to be another time to revisit. The mural for this eatery on Sago St is quite intrigued. A quick look at a distance, one might think it is the real interior of the restaurant.

IMG_0306IMG_0297IMG_0305

Gifts for the L&J, M&B, granddaughters are of no problems but not so easy for the grandsons. Still have a few more weeks (between overseas visitors!) to figure out before packing!!

Thu: if you are enjoying your afternoon as much as these two, then you are doing something right 🙂 Tkx to Calvin and Andrew for whiskey tasting at CC where the wall and floor murals are getting new make-overs!

Wall murals seemed to be the in-thing recently…

For those who remember the Old National Library Building (1960-2004), pix downloaded from various sites. Today, all that remains of the building at its original site are two red-bricked entrance pillars standing near the Fort Canning Tunnel. You can find a wall mural of it at CC. Drop by for a visit and a cuppa!

Have to deal with a complain from downstairs neighbour who went directly to HDB about leakage of the AC. Was not even aware that my AC was leaking. Will call them and find out what it is all about…

Vintage Fair 2016

4 Apr 2016 – Journey East

Sat: the heat and haze are not the best reasons to be lazy but such is the reality of life and I am lazy! How blessed and privileged to be able to just vegetate for a day!

IMG_0275IMG_0274IMG_0273

Sun: at Great World City M1 to try and get more info but to be served by an arrogant condescending young fellow. Bye-bye to the LG phone and tkx for all the communication thru’ it.  Appreciations to Clem who got me a used iPhone and now I have a functioning phone and am sooo up-to-date with What’s App etc 🙂 It is very overwhelming with an Akira TV, a vtech landline phone, Alcatel one touch Pixi3 touchpad and now an iPhone. Will take me sometime to learn to use all these high-tech gadgets!

IMG_0214IMG_0215IMG_0216

Gift Greetings at Great World City – bought a set of kiddies’fireman raincoat and a pair of rubber boots at promotional prices S$55! Have been eying these for sometime but it was then way out of the budget without the promotion. Like the froggy ones too.

A pleasant evening walk to discover many new places and beautiful lightnings at Carlton City Hotel.

IMG_0265IMG_0269IMG_0270

The new Oasia Hotel, not yet quite open looks colourful with it’s evening lights. A car had its hood up and upon walking nearer, the owner of this Peugeot with a cute ‘wind-up key’ explained he was just cooling the engine! Ending the evening with this tree is my high-point. Nothing can replace the fascination for nature.

Mon: a good week to all and Happy Birthday to RY.

Consider a tree for a moment. As beautiful as trees are to look at, we don’t see what goes on underground – as they grow roots. Trees must develop deep roots in order to grow strong and produce their beauty. But we don’t see the roots. We just see and enjoy the beauty. In much the same way, what goes on inside of us is like the roots of a tree – Joyce Meyer

All Fools’ Day 2016

1 Apr 2016 – With NO Mobile – For Real and Not A Joke!

img_0940world.cgi

Tue: usual senior day at the neighbourhood grocery Giant, which had a promotion with salmon. Clem dropped by and I made some Bourbon Salmon and Wild Rice for a bite before he headed home by foot via East Coast Pk – app 15-16km. Unable to walk with him not wanting to rip up the stitches in the gum.

Wed: too much on-going mentally and physically. Both mind and body needed a break and it is easier said than done! Worked hard at just not letting the mind wander but ended up zzzzz…

e77efa5635_345x518_fe9e112a35Thu: Happy Bday Jo who will be celebrating her last year in her 70s. Dinner tomorrow night. Had to get out before dozing off again.

Fri: Good Friday – safe and sound back in SIN after a nice break. Glad to be able to catch up with Lawrence who was visiting for a few days and taking off tomorrow. Appreciations to Les&Ivy for dinner@Tanglin Club. Yummy to taste a good tender lamb Irish Strew – had the beef one on Paddy’s Day which is not so traditional as the lamb!

Sat: a rest day needed and also have not been sleeping too well with a problem-tooth 🙁 Still hoping that it will pass but know that this will not be the case and have stopped one of my meds in anticipation that it will have to go. Mon: after such a savoury week and weekend, the week started with a visit to the dentist and was prepared for the worst! The infected tooth had to go and has been giving me problems over the years. A walk-in patient at NDC and after 2hrs wait + a few minutes with a good young handsome dentist 🙂 another tooth gone, S$150 poorer is again another reminder to enjoy every moment while there are still teeth 🙂 🙂

Beautiful blue sky on bus196 after the dentist. Major constructions on-going at and around the Outram MRT. Those driving in this area, drive with care.

Tue: back to daily normal meds. Soups and soft foods are in the menu for the next few days. No worries, have cooked ready some yummy things to be put into the blender and pumpkin soup is one of my favourties.

Continued to Circular Rd to get some shots of the party area, but seemed like most of today’s pix are not sharp – blame it on the headache…

IMG_9761IMG_9762How am I going to survive the rest of the afternoon? As it is, am already seeing strange artwork!

Need to get some shopping done in Chinatown and get ready for my KUA trip tomorrow. Can it be that it was 2011 when I was last there?? This time round, it will be my first time flying there.

Will probably be MIA online if I do not get access to internet for the week ahead…

Arrived there in Aug1965 with the feeling of lost and loneliness then. This day there was usually wet and grey! B/W1965 pix downloaded from RTE archives.

Dinner for this special day, no green cabbage, corn-beef or beer but the colour scheme is Irish and the Shanagarry pottery plates are from my 1960s Dublin days 🙂

Dearest Linn, love and miss you. Hugs from mom.

You taught me what unconditional love feels like.

You changed everything.

You turned me into a mom.

And even though you are not my only child, you will always be my first.

Motherhood has taught me the meaning of living in the moment and being at peace. Children don’t think about yesterday, and they don’t think about tomorrow. They just exist in the moment – Jessalyn Gilsig

Sat: there is a Peter Pan in most of us and hopefully he will always be there no matter how deeply buried. Time and place for everything and he must be allowed to surface now and then, especially in candy stores like Candylicious 🙂

Lunched at Soup Restaurant/Vivo City****with family, grandnephew Darrly (sitting between his mother Daisy and his aunt Judy) who received his first internship pay – such a lovely young gentleman he has grown to be. My favourtie venue for soup but could only eat a spoon of everything as the next lunch awaits!

Continuing with tea at LeVeL33 too filled-up to eat, but a cup of tea with good views and company to celebrate the day! Not only a place at the world’s highest urban craft brewery, but looks like a good whiskey selection. Their food look good too!

The main reason for sticking around this area was to wait for sundown. i light Marina Bay 2016 – Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival where I found my wings&hallow and walked the Jubilee Bridge for the first time! Captured a delightful moon between the buildings smiling down to a rocket trying to reach it…

My favourite this year is Lampshade by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, ‘a simple bamboo structure covered by solar cells that harness sunlight in the day, but illuminate the interior at night with energy enough to power a thousand lamps. Here’s the best part: the lamps will be donated to off-grid communities while the bamboo structure will be reused to benefit others in an effort to prolong material usage’

The grandchildren would have liked the fun-fair and, no! I was not about to go on the bumper-car (my favourite) or any other rides after a whole day of eating!

Have observed myself making the transitions from being a girl to a woman, mother and grandmother and still feeling young at heart, ie still planning on walking the E1 in 2017. But my energy-level and reflection in the mirror are not in sync with what I feel 🙂

Mon: Happy Bday to sweet Ellie, 2nd grandchild. How can 11yrs have gone by so quickly???

44eefe9be4_345x518_b670dcd0ecThe Kid From The Big Apple*****Sarah raised in New York visits Malaysia for the first time and learns why her grandfather, Gen and mother, Sophia have not seen each other since she was born and why they care so much about their cultural traditions. Elders see the younger generations as eyesores because of their ‘westernised’ behaviour and poor moral’s. Whilst the youngsters on the other hand, have no time for their elders.

Sadly, this is a growing global phenomenon but this touching movie gives some hope, but only if both sides make the effort!

Appreciations to SY for lunch at AMK-Hub and for accompanying me to search for O’bean at AMK Ave10. Joseph&wife make a delicious nuts-cereal cake, organic and healthy – ‘Baklava’, but need to order in advance there. Fortunately this month they are having road-shows and one can buy them at ‘Kokee Multi Nuts’  at Novena Square2 now and Expo this weekend. Must go to those venues to get some.

Tue: happenings from my neck of the woods today – MPTC has been working closely with other agencies to address that some chess players are causing a nuisance and disturbing others by playing till late night in common areas and void-decks. Walked by here when I do my grocery, even though the wet-market is closed for renovations, Giant is just next to this block.

The Meaning of Bonsai

12 Mar 2016 – Planted In A Container

IMG_9335IMG_9336Thu: exploring a new area to try out a new supplement – Recogen,  a German quality Bioactive collagen peptides and a diet supplement that is supposed to benefit both young and elderly suffering from joint pains.

Rather expensive S$62 for a month supply, but worth to try if it helps!

IMG_9337IMG_9338

To save the delivery charges and extra charges etc, bus 43 or 135 takes me directly to Paya Lebar Rd and app 2blocks walk to Ubi Ave 2 Blk 3021. It was a drooling experience to walk pass wholesalers for roast, pork, ducks, chickens and sucking pigs + some pastry shops too.

IMG_9342IMG_9341IMG_9340

To get to Choa Chu Kang took well over 1hr by bus and MRT. Appreciations to Hong for having me to his lovely condo and for letting me take pix and feasting my eyes on his delightful bonsai.

IMG_9354IMG_9356IMG_9343

Bonsai trees represent harmony in nature – contained. It is perfect for anybody who appreciates their understated beauty and unique form.

IMG_9347IMG_9352IMG_9357IMG_9351

Even I who have nothing alive in my accommodations – except me 🙂 could think of cultivating bonsai someday when I am less mobile and unable to travel…

By Choa Chu Kang Park at Rasa Istimewa****are the most delicious steamed see hum – baby cockles. They were half the size of the normal ones, fresh, tender and juicy – best ever tasted. Ate nearly a whole plate (except 3 bad ones), and live to tell about it 🙂 🙂 The otak-otak are very good and served piping hot; ok clams.

Friendly and good service to the point of concerning as one of the servers told us to not eat too much of the see-hum. Even showed his scar for his heart by-pass surgery!! Tkx to Hong for this yummy dinner and  lovely evening. Nice to catch up with Boon.

Fri: TGIF need a day for the stomach to settle as tomorrow, Sat will be busy with family – 2 lunches and 1 dinner ahead. A fantastic weekend to all.

Many people associate bonsai trees with inner peace, serenity and contentment, and while its true that most of the people who successfully rear bonsai have these qualities they are earned over time.
