Early 2023Bday Dinner

8 Jan 2023 – Belated Decoration From Norway

Thu: on this 12thDay of Christmas, when all the decorations are usually taken down, but this beautiful paper-mache-handmade star by #6 arr from Norway(snail-mailed 16Dec). Another reason to leave the decorations up until the weekend!

Happy Bday to my High-Tech-Guru Leonard, without him would have given up being online! Nice to see allotment-gardens, a lone-swimmer+some school-field-trips enjoying the day on my late morning walk. A good teacher will let the mind stretched by a new experience that can never go back to its old dimensions…

~7k walk from ECpk viaKatongPkUnderpass-MountbattenRd-OldAirportRd-blk34CassiaCres to pick up broLes’s, and my too favourite mini-paus. Took the bus16 back, not a fan of carrying too much stuff when walking longer distances!

TanglinMall is ready for the CNY, elevators at the overhead bridge on GrangeRd(TourismBoard-GrangeResidences) are now working.

Nice to be able catch up with cousinYeng, her daughter Jessica visiting from Canada+cousinChing&HengHuat Missing ZhaoMing who just flew off back to Canada.(13thAuntie’s branch). Appreciations to Les&Ivy for having us.

Fri: tkx to cousin Lock, a medical dr who survived cancer for this interesting share(seen  it some time ago, but forgot to share!), educational but do pay attention and watch the whole video despite it being nearly 2hrs.  Sadly for me, words like corruption, greed, hypocrisy, etc pop into the mind.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmxUsAI29fw

Sat: thank you thank you Gel for this early BdayDinner, one of the freshest&delicious crab meal I have had – what a treat.
There is a saying in Baltimore that crabs may be prepared in fifty ways and that all of them are good.H. L. Mencken

Yummy noodles from PehGee delivered from IpohTuckKee Son/KatongBranch 怡保德记仔highly recommended. The only issue now is that they are next to one of my favourite ChickenRice stalls@KatongShoppingCentre, oh dear! the luxury of these kind of choices-hahaha!!

With my kind of energy nowadays, my contribution, desserts&drinks – store-bought strawberries&grapes, homemade-coconut-AgarAgar+LemongrassTea. Fun meeting new ppl and one who has climbed to the top of Mt Everest(Sagarmatha) 8,849m,29,032ft. What an exciting&interesting evening listening to Lee PehGee’s 2009climb, something I will never do despite that the views being spectacular from there. Pix credits to Gel&Lynette.

Sun: finally Christmas decorations can be taken down to be stored away, and with some luck, might be able to put them up for another season! Just to know what I have in storage before taking out batteries, etc wrapping&boxing them. The 2022AdventVillage can hopefully be improvised with a coat of gloss paint on the houses for the next season…

Welcome 2023

Just hope that I will catch my breath, have been short of it the past week! Feelings come and go, but conscious breathing keeps me sane.

And so I have to live. Because we live for more than just ourselves, Most of the time we live for others, keep putting one foot before the other, left and right, left and right, so that walking becomes a habit, just like breathing. Ina n out, left and right ― Thrity Umrigar, The Space Between Us

Enjoying these beautiful paper-pop-ups of 5Gold-rings, 4Calling-birds, 3French-hens, 2Turtledoves 1Partridge in a PearTree. The most exciting news – The Beam Raising Ceremony is one of the most important rituals in the construction of houses and ancestral halls in China. The Republican Era hall was built by Lam Tee Chew (Lin Zichao) in Tangbianli Village, Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province. To carry forth his legacy of caring for the community, it is being reborn as a cultural heritage education center and a resource for overseas Chinese as well as domestic and international scholars and visitors. It is also being revived for traditional purposes for the villagers and to support their livelihood.

Fri: appreciations to Lionel for catering – Dry MeeSiam, IncheKabin FriedChicken+bought PulutHitam with coconut-ice-cream was enjoyed by all. Tkx for good company&gifts from Hong, Boon&Will and a nice ending to 2022.

Tkx to Les&Ivy for dinner@ParadiseTeochew/ScottsSq. Great to catch up with Kat for drinks@Rochalie before she takes off back to USA. Appreciations to Glady for getting the Grab, feeling sooo stuffed!

Used up the remain of the $100CDC vouchers today before they expire 31Dec – the store owner has a pet!

Sat: another dinner with some bro’s Steven’s family tonight to end 2022 – to be edited with pix if not too tired. On this last 2022day&7thDayOfChristmas, no Swans-a-Swimming, but a day for reflection of appreciations&gratitudes to all who have crossed my path and looking forward to more crossings ahead for 2023.

Welcome home grandnephew Darryl from Australia. After being away for one year, his first request was for a Prata meal. Caught up Darryl+the family, not for food as the stomach would explode with more food.

Enjoy your moments with family&friends + the extra spark of gratitude the season brings. Appreciations to Hannah&Heiko for German home-baked cookies and for helping to eat left-overs!

Thank you Adeline for this video – this party popper has&will always ring in the season with laughters&joy for all generations.
Mon: Happy Boxing Day – History.com explains that one theory of the holiday’s origin is that the day after Christmas was when boxes filled with small gifts and money would be given to household servants and employees who had to work on Dec. 25. The gifts were meant as a thank you for their service throughout the year. Today Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday, and no you are not going to find me near any shops, especially today also a public holiday in SIN. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Boxing-Day
Tkx to Clement for DimSum-lunch@PeachGarden/OCBC Centre with my favourite JellyFish.

Thu: The Banshees Of Inisherin leads LondonCritics’ CircleAwards nomination. WildAtlanticWay, InisMor &AchillIslands were amazing when last visited. Being on screen brought back lovely memories despite of the movie being on the dark side…
Somehow there was some confusion and was in Chinatown today when it is supposed to be tomorrow. Anyways all’s well that ends well and things happen for a reason – managed to get some errands done since I was there that would probably not be done tomorrow.
Appreciate visit from cousins Yeng&ZhaoMing (visiting from Vancouver/Canada) and Ching&HengHuat, could kick myself for forgetting to take pix when I for once! had them together this afternoon – what’s up with me today? first, wrong day and then forgetting to take pix?? Does Time Really Heal Everything?

13 Dec 2022: Happy St Lucia Day

Sat: The phrase time heals all wounds may be first attributed to the Greek poet Menander, who lived around 300BC and said, Time is the healer of all necessary evils. Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem, Troilus and Criseyde, written in the 1380s contains the phrase: As tyme hem hurt, a tyme doth hem cure. Time heals all wounds is one of the most popular sayings, but it may not be completely true for everyone. Although time is not exactly a healer, it can have healing purposes. Ultimately, it’s up to you to find ways to achieve healing and or ways of dealing with the hurt or wounds.

Sun: 1st,2nd,3rd places for their age-group at the Annual Kiawah marathon/half-marathon, SC/USA. Congratulations and way to go Linn,Erin,MC what a wonderful way to ring in this season of joy on this 3rdSunday of Advent. GoRaibhMaithAgat/thank you on this 11thAdvent lovely cool wet day here.
Thy fate is the common fate of all; Into each life some rain must fall – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Tkx to dear bro&sil for Sunday dinner – my contribution is the bitter-gourd from the coffee-shop across the road. With the exception of Ivy, everyone likes it, so I do get some to take to them once in a while. Les made lamb which was marinated for the day and it was deliciously tasty&tender. Do not always take bus36 back to the East from RochalieDr, but will try to do so in the Dec month to enjoy the lights on OrchardRd.

Mon: news of sis Jo falling yesterday was not how I wanted to start my week! Made my way to ChangiGeneralHospital/CGH to find her still in the overcrowded A&E. Thank goodness to hear that there was a single room available later in the afternoon and that all the tests so far are good – hopefully she will be able to be home soon.

New territory to explore since in the area – EastPointMall by SimeiMRT-st, just a few blocks from the hospital. Appreciations to Clement for meeting for lunch to cheer me up, needed it.

Tue: Happy StLuciaDay to those marking the day – have not baked Luciabrød/Luciaboller/Lussekatte since L&M were kids.  Sometimes it feels like yesterday, other times it feels like a lifetime ago! This time of the year when it is usually busy with the Christmas preparations and believe it or not, I have not had a tree since the kids left home, and not do not intend to have a tree again in this life-time. Tusen takk/thank you on this 13thAdventDay for those good memories.

In Fond Memory of DavidWT Wong

9 Dec 2022 – A Dedication to Cousin David

Wed: needed a quiet day to rest and to gather my thoughts after being on the go everyday for over a week.

Thu&Fri: sad news that cousin DavidWT WONG(1940-2022) passed away peacefully in HI/USA, was really hoping to catch up with him next year, but alas it was not to be.

Thank you to a dear cousin for fond memories – tkx to him I am still friends and in contact with some of his students. 1st visit in HI/USA was Thanksgiving2002 when #1 was only 1+yr young, and before blogging, thus unable to locate pix.

dsc_0003-200-x-133.jpgmohnl_lobby1-200-x-120.jpg

Apr2008 HNL/USA: a spiritual night, ie drinking, hahaha! Sat night at the KahalaHotel&Resort with some of the professors from the University of HI- Religion Faculty.

Dec2009 SIN: walked up MtFaber for old-time sakes! Pouring rains after HendersonWaves; had to abandon the remaining of the SouthernRidges/南部山脊 (18 Dec 2008/Walk- post search). For cousin David, this 1st visit to Vivo&H-Waves gave him another angle of SIN. Like his brother Wilki, they did not even know of the H-Waves’ existence until now!

May2010 SIN: cousin David, his Japanese friend Akira and two young female students, Jennifer&LaiLane from HonoluluCommuityCollege/HCC arrived Fri night, the smallest group for his last tour as he approaches his 70th bday. He claims that he will retire after this trip but will believe that when it really happens! They had one night lay-over in Taipei/Taiwan to ease the jet-lag. It is always a pleasure to show SIN off, especially to first time visitors. Was fortunate to be included in his 2004 trip which was an educational&fun experience.

Oct2010 HNL/USA: Christine&KevinTRAN met at a Thai refugee camp. As BoatPeople, both had struggled hard to escape Vietnam in the 1980s…their youngest and only daughter, Jennifer is in HCC, a student of cousin David and no doubts that she will good well and complete her studies under his guidance.

Jan2012 SIN: now that HI/USA has passed midnight, the whole world is in sync to the year of 2012. Being a wimp with crowds, the choice was to celebrate a quiet New Year’s Eve with cousin David&Leah from HI who will be flying off this evening. Tkx to Mica&Mun for drinks and food at the SINSwimmingClub  where we found a quiet place.

Mar2019 HI/USA: thank you to Wilki&Pattie for a scrumptious homemade dinner of CornishHens, Ox tongue&tendons, home-grown cucumbers+other veggies, these were consumed in good company&conversations. Back to Manoa via the LikeLIke Highway just before midnight and crashed for 7hrs, tkx to Huang for driving.

Appreciations to a very special group of young ppl who crossed my path nearly 2decades ago when they were doing their SE-Asia Study program traveling thru’ The Silk Route. Husband&fatherhood becomes Adrian, glad to have him&Taylor into Lisa’s life where the of 3 of them make such a lovely family together.

The last time I was with David in HI/USA there was a double rainbow outside his house then. Mahalo/thank you dear cousin for crossing my path in this life journey.

When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around,
Heaven opens a magic lane.
When all the clouds darken up the skyway
There’s a rainbow highway to be found,
Leading from your window pane
To a place behind the sun,
Just a step beyond the rain.
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.

Fri8Nov2019 SIN: tkx to Wilki&Patty for this small family gathering@PorKee (where their parents used to frequent) with some of our favourite dishes. It is a very rare occasion to get all my 3Wong cousins together and the last time together with David here in SIN.

He will be greatly missed and may he now RIP. Thank you to all for the kind condolences&sympathetic words. Indeed my cousin lived his life fully with gusto&kindness, setting an example to his students&others to do the same – gone now, but never forgotten.

Standard Chartered Marathon 2022

6 Dec 2022 – Tampines1, Hub & Mall

Sat: nice walk down memory lane from the bus stop in front of CapitolBuilding crossing StamfordRd to VictoriaSt where main entrance to my old CHIJ school was.

From the GateOfHope heading down the red-tiles-floor where it was an orphanage once-upon-a-time now houses many trendy eateries.

Delighted to see the beautiful old fig-tree still standing by CaldwellHouse, former Rev Mother’s office – a place familiar to me being summoned there more than once!

Welcome Garry back to SIN and on this 3rdAdventDay,TerimaKasih/thank you to Clement for yummy lunch@LeiGarden. Do not remember when I was last there, and since it is still there, must be doing something right as it is the only restaurant I remember from here when I returned in 1998.

Random happenings while walking off lunch…

Sun: StandardCharteredMarathon were dominated by Kenyans with EzekielOmullo winning the men’s marathon in 2hr20min20sec. ~0645hrs at the half-way-mark/MarineCove to cheer on Kevin who completed his 1st-SIN-Marathon&40+other Marathons around the world.

Getting confused and lost@Tampines but to discover&learn that TampinesMall, Tampines1,TampinesHub,CenturySq are 4different places, but are connected in one way or other. Tkx to Kiera, a delightful grandniece for showing me around the impressive Hub – last here was in 2017. https://amylamsg.com/2017/08/11/52nd-national-day/

Such a good idea as to the use of the open space in the middle, will try to figure out if there will be a movie for my taste screening to experience this open-air-concept but with a roof.

An amazing library on 5levels including 2culirnary studios.

Including play-stations for the younger non-readers to release their energy.

ShepherdPie lunch@DutchColony

Tkx to Garry for PonggolNasiLemak dinner+dessert/Hoshino Coffee@Capitol.

Ending this day with one of SINs most entertaining comedian KumarXXX where he celebrates 30yrs in show business. Find something that makes you happy. Even if it’s less money, at least you’re satisfied, and you’re happy – Kumar.

Hello December 2022

2 Dec 2022 – New Advent Calendar In The Making

Tue: Happy 16thBday to my grandson, JohnW who was born in SIN. Glad that he could revisit his birth-country earlier this year in Jul. To an amazing grandson who taught me that the Eastern-Box turtle only roams 1 mile its whole life and if it is removed from its area/home then for the rest of its life it will roam aimlessly stressed out…

https://amylamsg.com/2018/07/06/4th-july-2018/

Tkx to Linn for the share of his newly-born pix as the only one I am able to locate is from PatLynn&David’s wedding and it is not even sharp.

Helping out @CC and it is a wonder how light&portable Helinox are to wander around with or to leave them at home and they do not take much space in use or being stored.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost ― Tolkien

Wed: Christmas mail done and out on this last Nov2022 day. Here in SIN and only@CC will you find the most extensive selection of Chaco which have carried me millions of steps all over the world the past 30+yrs without problems and will be wearing them till I drop!

I like Cinderella, she has a good work ethic and she likes shoes. The fairy tale is all about the shoe at the end – hahaha

Putting together a new paper pop-up-village AdventCalender from IKEA this year so that 6small candies can be inserted into the houses with hopes&thoughts that some Christmas I can reunite with all 6grandchildren.
