ByeBye February2023

28 Feb 2023 – Searching For Air Fares

Sat: catching up with new movie – The Whale, a reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. Because of his character’s severe weight, BrendanFraser had on a heavy prosthetic suit for the role and he did a good job = pix downlowded.

Sun: proud of grandnephew Ike in Chicago,IL/USA who will be climbing the stairs of an iconic Chicago skyscraper today. Pix credits to niece Dika. Please see his message below –
Hey, everyone! I’m Isaac Borowsky.
On February 26, as part of the Hustle Chicago stair climb for charity, I’ll be walking up 94 stories and 1,632 steps of the John Hancock Center. Now known as 875 North Michigan, the 1,128-foot-tall Hancock was the second tallest skyscraper in the world when it was built in 1969. Hustle Chicago is organized by the Respiratory Health Association and is dedicated to fighting lung disease.
Lung illness has personally affected my family in a lot of ways. My paternal grandfather died of a lung condition, and my mother, great-aunt, maternal grandfather and I all have asthma. Fighting lung disease is a cause I’m very much connected to, and I’m proud to be doing something about it, even in just my own little way. So to honor that cause, I’ll be climbing

Way to go, Ike who climbed 94-floors in 24mins15secs(23rd in the 12-18age-group).

Fond memory of 1stBorn climbing the 35-floors SunTrustCenter,Orlando.FL in her High-School days – pix downloaded.

A nice quiet weekend to give the body a rest and let the mind reflect before the short month of Feb is over. Reflecting on actions, thoughts, words, etc hoping to gain more perspectives. While I have been busy catching up with new movies, the younger generations do us proud by living an active constructive life with niece back to doing her duties by saving life at the hospital in snowy BC,Canada. Life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forwards – Søren Kierkegaard

Mon: breakfast@MT-Hawkers for my congeeS$5 and coffeeS$1.50

Tue: air fares from CAE-OSL-CAE(S$1,724.33/RT) are more expensive than SIN-CAE-SIN! Need to figure out if&how I can find lower fares, since I have the time for the bus or train to NY depending on how much I might be able to save and if my energy level will be up to that kind of travel??

Has it really been a decade ago that the new playground was completed but traffic lights are being installed at the junction of MarineCres&Terr. Amazingly its still the same view 10yrs down the road, except that it is rainy today and the time for the traffic lights now take a longer time to change, probably due to the school hours traffic-jams.

28Feb2023: WorldOmeter of COVID-19 total deaths are as follow:

SIN/pop ~5.6+mil in an area of ~721km²  – 1,722

SIN&Norway’s figures are the same as last month.
Total deaths for the world today – 6,798,868
If you don’t make time for exercise, you’ll probably have to make time for illness…

From A Sea Burial

25 Feb 2023 – To A Birthday

We begin to die from the moment we are born, for birth is the cause of death. The nature of decay is inherent in youth, the nature of sickness is inherent in health, in the midst of life we are verily in death — Buddha

ie Birth and Death go hand in hand!

Wed&Thu: was not feeling too well and had to cancel my visit to bro Steven – did not want to spread whatever bug that was bugging me to a home full of seniors!

Fri: an early start bus196 changing@Bedok to bus2 heading towards ChangiVillage. Passing by the ChangiPrison always bring back memories of the days when father drove us to the beach house. Being a child who had motion sickness then, would be happy as I knew we were near the destination – B&Wpix  downloaded.

ChangiV-Hawkers is the few places that has my favourite Kedondong/SpondiasDulcis 沙梨juice

Some new interesting seafoods eating places to try in the future, but for now, a short walk is the better choice

13uncle PakHoy’s final wish for not being enclosed in an urn but be scattered about, thus a sea burial was fulfilled by his 2daughters Yeng&Ching & grand daughter Jessica today.
The ride out to the seas with a nice breeze was thank goodness not too choppy and may he now finally RIP.
To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die – TCampbell
A quick trip to YanChuanRoasters/UbiAve2 to pick up roast foods for tonight and tkx for T@Les&Ivy. Yeng&family brought fancy yummy cakes from TigerLily and the passionfruit cake was good.
Appreciations&tkx for yummy foods to Calvin’s Bday dinner.
Iyas homemade curry and most unique savoury NasiLemak Bday cake was the best cake for the Bday boy who is not a fan of the usual sweet cakes. 苏亚吉&陈安安BlackVinegarPig’sTrotter 猪脚醋 – all so delicious, pix credits to Helen.
My contribution was the presentation of the roasted foods from YanChuan – did not have energy&time to make my fruitsalad, Calvin’s favourite! Appreciations to Chris for the ride back to the East, nice to be driven and be able to just grab a quick shower before crashing after such a long busy day. Has been a while ago since I could handle more than 1event per day!

RIP 13Uncle LEE PakHoy(1928-2023)

21 Feb 2023 – Condolences to the LEE-family

Sat: nice quite day to relax and just as well despite not knowing what will happen the week ahead…

Sun: 13uncle LEE PakHoy(1928-2023) passed away peacefully today ~11.00hrsSIN-time. Condolences to 13auntie, cousins LEE Yeng+ZaoMing, LEE Ching+HengHuat, and niece XU Jessica for the loss of their husband,father,f-i-l,grandfather. May he RIP. Wake to be held tonight&tomorrow night@OurLady of LourdesChurch,50-OphirRd,S-188690. Cremation Tue21Feb 20.00hrs.

Uncle LEE PakHoy is the son of paternal grandmother CHAN SweeNgor’s sister, but I do not have details of this branch of the family. Have met CHAN WeiKeng&family and AuntieNgor&family from the CHAN branch, but as far as I know it is also a large family.

Tkx to nephew Clement for my favourite HokkienMee dinner@BullionBar/EC-Rd and SouffléPancake@Typhoon TaiwaneseCafe/i12 KatongMall. Nice needed ~5k walk eating our way on the EastSide and walk on EC-Pk.

Mon: booked tickets with S$1,724.33/RT to leave SIN Mon1May2023 via-SFO-IAD to arr in CAE,USA 2May2023 – hoping&keeping my fingers crossed that things will work out for me to reunite with my flock in SC,USA this summer. It has been 3+yrs ago, Oct2019 since I was last in USA. The mind is willing, but not sure how the body will handle 4airports on different time-zones on these long-distance flights – time will tell…

Wake@OurLady of LourdesChurch/SIN, not that 13uncle was a religious man but just that there are too many deaths recently and this is one of few available places to hold a wake. Interesting to overhear held mass under a tent in Tamil(must be the first time hearing this) by the church under renovation, not surprising considering that it is in the neighbourhood of LittleIndia.

Dinner@Herbivore/FortuneCentre with Doris.

Tue: those celebrating Mardi Gras today, enjoy but do take care. Sad to hear about the Mardi Gras celebration shooting in NewOrleans,LA,USA.

Back to the church to follow the hearse to the crematorium.

MandaiCrematorium – first time here in the dark, no lights at my parents’ niches made it unadvisable to visit. But tonight is to wish our uncle a safe last journey on earth.

Appreciations to the LEE-cousins&family (missing Yeng who just had surgery in Canada, but hoping to be in SIN on Thu) for a delicious meal@TheFamousKitchen/SembawangRd (known for its OvenBakedVolcanoChicken火山烤雞) celebrating life with fond memories for their father. Uncle PakHoy shared his big smile with humour and my memories of him are of his passion for his hobbies in bonsai&photography.

A good answer by any seniors who have to deal impertinent younger ppl…

SIN 2023 Budget

18 Feb 2023 – My Own Budget

Wed: grocery shopping@Giant/Tampines was a success considering that a total bill of S$146.43 was redeemed totally (probably the only seldom time!) with CDC/S$145, SeniorSavS$4.53,Yuu/S$1.43, including promotional items amounting to S$30.02 for many reduced snack items that I would not normally buy.

Got this bladefree-fan+light from JapanHouse/Parkway – have been looking for something like this for a long time and since it was reduced from S$17 to 10, worth to try and see how effective&how long it will last? Also time to clean the laptop S$6.50.

2023-SIN-budget is now out with more savings for this year.

Life is a daily cleansing. Negativity must be washed away, if you wish to attract positive experiences to your life – Leon Brown

Amazing Lego-Building from nephew(took him 5hrs on a rainy afternoon and get these flowers together). #6(still on-going with his cities), and busy setting up birdhouses he has helped to built – pix credits to Clement&2nd-born

Valentine’s Day Lindt-goodies for the Fabulous5+1friend arrived a day late to save on shipping, looks like they do not have any problems with belated greetings – pix credits to 1st-born

Thu: congratulations to LexingtonHighSchool,SC,USA – 2022Girls-CrossCountry-5A-Team, here being recognized and honoured for their State Championship in SC-House of Representatives. Well done to all the coaches, proud of my 1st-Born and Jeremy who coach a sport that requires discipline, endurance, strength&speed.

Appreciations&tkx for a sunset gravlaks, lobster dinner+red-velvet-lavacake.

Pleasant ride on the last shuttle-bus(21.45hrs)from IKEA-Bedok catching Bus196 with hardly any traffic on the road. Pix credits to Helen.

Fri: picked up meds@FarrerPkMedicalCentre. Movie The King Of Musang King 猫山王中王  – entertaining but a tad too long and being a fan of durians, had to watch it. Nice to see a local flick with JackNeo,MarkLee,Yeo YannYann in it. Early Bday dinner with Henry.

Sat: tkx for the PrimeMagazine featuring Les in their Feb-Mar2023 issue.

Sat: posting from Aug2020 with exciting news in the medical world for the first implant of the AngelMed Guardian device in Asia-Pacific by a leading Cardiologist LeslieLAM – so proud of my big brother. Hope that I may never need one of those even when being an admirer of angels, do like their logo – pix downloaded.

Many of us have had Oracle experiences, though we may not have called them that. Have you had the feeling there’s a guardian angel looking out for you? Or heard an inner voice that is not your own? Gotten a profound insight that you would not have otherwise considered? Had your prayers answered? Especially in an unexpected way? These are a few of the ways that the invisible world guides us.― Cristina Smith

2022 Movies To Watch

14 Feb 2023 – Tiger Lily Wine

Sat: from Loon – It could not be more typical of you, its even an outlaw – that is so much like a hiker.  Appreciations&tkx to AT-hiker Loon for this site. If I do get to Damascus, VA,USA for TrailDays in 19-21May2023, will get a few bottles to share. Besides my own 2005AT-thru-hike-trail name, TigerLily, do also remember the trail names of those who hiked with me then.

Sun: have been watching older movies from Netflix, etc and of course not remember most of them! List of 2022movies on the big screen to watch if not travelling. RottenTomatoes/RT guide list has 100choices to choose from but not all are to my taste! 12 of my choice, one for each month. So far have watched #3(brilliant performance of a grumpy widower by TomHanks), 4(dark and slow moving), 7(entertaining), 11(good cross-culture acting).

A Love Song/USA,drama
A Man Called Otto/USA,drama comedy – not in RT list

Mon: mask-wearing is no longer mandatory on public transport from today as COVID-19 restrictions are stepping down to Dorscon-Green. Not even sure if SIN was ever in Dorscon-Red?? Will still keep mask handy when indoors in crowds, handwashing regularly and not touching the face, etc will ALWAYS be good habits to have.

Tue: Happy Valentine’s Day – the origins of Valentine’s Day is a pagan festival, Lupercalia in ancient Rome, not as romantic as you would imagine! It is said later that Valentine was a priest, who defied emperors’ orders and secretly married couples to spare husbands from wars; he was beheaded on 14Feb~270AD.

Love is blind, marriage is the eye-opener — P Thomason

Today according to Hallmark, ~145million cards are sold in USA and ~250million stems of flowers globally each year!

At my age, an affair of the heart is a bypass! —Joan Rivers

Grocery shopping day@Giant in Tampines – to be updated in next posting…

10 Feb 2023 – Mavis Tutorial Centre

Tue: woke up to sad news for this Tue – prayers&thoughts are out to all affected and condolences to those have have lost family or friends in this earthquake 7.8 magnitude earthquake which rocked Turkey&Syria.

Another day in class, learning&understanding more, but still slow at grasping when things are moving so fast with just a click of a button. Discovered that there is the convenience of direct bus31 from MP Rd to TampinesInterchange.

Wed: need this day to clear the mind – watched a good movie, A Man Called Otto(2022) where TomHanks played brilliantly as a grumpy widower.  Based on a novel A Man Called Ove(2013) is a by Swedish writer FredrikBackman which I enjoyed and movie in Swedish was out in 2015.

Thu: last day of class – having come to the realization that the mind for HighTech is slow or perhaps that the interest is not fully present despite the willingness to learn in this 7thDecade of my life journey! Poor teacher Jimmy who must have the patience of a saint to deal with me. clicking buttons is too fast for me. Come Aug, to test the physical capabilities that with determination&focus if the body is still able to manage a 700+k walk which will be more fitting into my speed&steps…

Short walk and stroll in the Tampines area, nice post office, found interesting SINpostcards and together with the Rabbit postage would be cheerful Easter greetings to put in the mail next month. Somehow postage stamps are not so popular nowadays, but still like these miniature pieces of art.

There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning Krishnamurti

Fri: TGIF and a good weekend to all. Sharing 2amusing rainy pixs, one here from SIN many years ago on a StPat’sDayParade(many moons ago), and the other from Chicago,USA – no, have not been there! The simple&repetitive pitter patter sounds of raindrops are peaceful&restful for the overstimulated body&mind, enjoy the lovely cool-wet moments.

Appreciations to Ade for last night’s dinner@PP and tkx for Kana Shiok=hit with deliciousness/singlish. This black olive with Asian preserved vegs+herbs&spices really taste out of this world.

In memory of Burt Freeman Bacharach(1928 – 2023), may he now RIP.

LASALLE College Of The Arts

6 Feb 2022 – Visitors from Ireland

Fri: Welcome to the Rowans from Ireland. Appreciations&tkx to management&staff for an information&interesting LASALLE College of Arts tour.

Our eating&walking tour started at 1McNallySt, a bite of DimSum@FortuneCentre, and from CHIJMES, doing another similar ColonialWalk as with Tanja&Bill –

Ice-cream-break in front of ACM, tea-break@LauPaSat and ended the walk with a well-deserved beer tasting@LeVeL33 Craft-Brewery, world’s highest Urban Microbrewery.

Thank you BroJoe for keeping the rains away from your family until we were done with today’s tour.

Many are not aware that BroJoe(1923-2002) designed our IrishGradsOfSIN/IGAS logo and also he was the principal@StPatrick’s in 1975. When I returned to SIN in 1998-99 to live&work, the statue(but did not take any pix then), in the building on MarineParadeRd was a different one of that from today.

Many thanks to Margaret&Peter+Brendan for gifts and just love those Irish sayings, a country where I have had many experiences that have shaped part of my life journey. On Bus196 and the sky opened up on the way back to the EastSide. Going to be another night of good night sleep.

Sat: another lovely cool&wet day to chill and relax. Need to do some PowerPoint homework for the course, but not sure as to what I am doing, just going to give it a shot and hope that it is on the correct track…

In loving memory of bro Lawrence who would have been 89today. Have been at the piano for 6+decades and still at it when mood&time permit; the ukulele is only recently&btw! but the cello is history. Looking to donate the cello to some good cause and just heard from the administrators from LASALLE that the music department are in the talks. Would be appropriate place for the cello as Ireland was where I got my music scholarship&education.

Sun: Happy ChapGohMei十五暝 – meaning the 15night of CNY in the Chinese/Hokkien dialect and today signifies the end of the 15CNYday celebrations – also considered the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’sDay in some of this part of the world. Happy Thaipusamதைப்பூசம் to those marking this day, a festival celebrated by the Hindu/Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month(pix credits to niece Pat/May).Tkx to Seb for helping out with the WixWebsite course.

A wet afternoon eating&waiting patiently for the LionDance@MeiHeongYuen/Chinatown. Since this was the only CNY-LIonDance I would have the chance to watch, was supposed to start ~1600hrs! Rains cannot stop this Samsui woman from her work(pix credits to Victor), so no complains for eating, waiting&watching life goes by here at my favourite Chinese dessert location today!

Delayed by the rains until ~1900hrs, worth the wait

for this amazing 1hr performance by 新加坡鹤山会馆武术醒狮团SIN HokSanAssociationLionDanceTroupe

The finale with BossLady blessed with the good luck rearrangement&4D#9176. The year of the WaterRabbit has so far really brought water almost throughout the 15days of the CNY.

Took 14days for this snailmail from Norway and 8days from USA – would think that USA is further away and need more time, but that is not the case. Appreciations to 1st&2ndBorn for their thoughts. Belated Bday greetings but still in time for the CNY. Lungs-CT-scan results cleared of cancer, but still a chesty cough with phlegm that needs some attention on my next visit with the respiratory dr.

Thu: attending this course starting today, survived 0900-1800hrs day, but the focus was not fully there! Has been a while since I have attended a full day class, especially on building website when you get stuck on&to the screen and the eyes are not as they used to be.

Located conveniently by the TampinesMRT&BusInterchange, MavisTutorial is across the road from TampinesCentralShoppingSt. Not sure how I will handle another 2more days of this next week, had a splitting headache at the end of the day. Tkx to our government, this is a fully subsidized course.
