‘Crazy Christmas’

12 Dec 2015 – Unorganized And Unprepared

IMG_7620IMG_7617IMG_7619

Thu: not in the mood for this holiday season! At PostBank again trying to transfer what I own to PP, but unsuccessful again! Tkx to Clem, the family banker who got it done online for me and saved me another trip to the bank. The newly revamp food court at Marina Square has a view +lovely decor, and not too crowded. Nice!

IMG_7622IMG_7623IMG_7632

First a long needed relaxing massage at KENKO Wellness Spa***Entertaining opening performance of Dim Sum Dollies’ Crazy Christmas***at the Esplanade.

IMG_7640IMG_7638IMG_7637

The afternoon rains cool the city down for lovely evening walks and pix taking from Esplanade to the Fullerton Hotel.

IMG_7644IMG_7643

Am still trying to find out the purpose of these balls on ACM green??? They make good effects for the pix in the evenings and even better when there are some raindrops on them.

IMG_7666IMG_7656IMG_7663

Fullerton Hotel’s building, the former GPO was declared SIN 71st national monument by the National Heritage Board. Fond memories of buying stamps in this building back in the 1950s!

Tkx to these Hi-Tech people – Leo, Seb and Roy everything is back to normal after 24hrs of frustration 🙂

IMG_7560IMG_7555IMG_7561

Tue: Future of Us offers a glimpse of how SIN can live, work, learn and care in the future. Interesting design & concept but the contents are still missing some oomph.

CC to say hi. Christmas shopping with Clem.

IMG_7602IMG_7603IMG_7601

Wed: yeah Christmas greetings in the mail. Nice walk window-shopping and food tasting down Joo Chiat Rd. Beautifully restored Peranakan buildings

IMG_7593IMG_7599IMG_7594

and trendy boutiques.

IMG_7605IMG_7606IMG_7607

Tkx to Clem for dinner at Quentin’s***located in the Eurasian Club. Thank goodness the curry was not as spicy as expected but did have a side-kick for an exciting flavour.

IMG_7609IMG_7608

First visit there even though I pass by this place often when taking the #16bus.

IMG_7610IMG_7612

Like going out with Clem as he is a spot and willing to walk with me via the back and side lanes. Discovered this lovely temple Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple on Ceylon Rd. Never knew about this temple in my neck of the woods and glad to have stumble upon it.

The history of the Temple began more than 150 years ago – in the 1850s…

The Last Month Of SG50

8 Dec 2015 – Back to Reality

IMG_7507changiairport

Sat: safe and sound in SIN dark and early after an uneventful and on-scheduled Tiger-ride. This must have been the longest cruising on the tarmac after landing – seemed like there was no parking space. No worries all’s well that ends well and was back in my bed sleeping like a log zzzzz within an hour after getting off the plane. Definitely deserves the credibility of being the world’s best airport.

IMG_7510IMG_7509

Glad to catch up with Kat, Greg & Devon before they head back to NY/USA early tomorrow. Tkx to Les&Ivy for delicious seafood dinner at Long Beach Dempsey****

Sun: was planning earlier to be in JB/Malaysia to attend god-bro KeeJin’s funeral. Condolences to god-sis Pat and her family. Got news that the Sultan of Johore younger son’s funeral was also on the same day, which means that we will get probably get stuck in traffic all day in Malaysia.

IMG_7512IMG_7517IMG_7521

Instead got stuck in SIN traffic in the bus with roads closures and detours because of the marathon which completely escaped the mind. Apologies to Chuan & family from KCH who had to wait.

Mon: just had to rest for a day before I get sick. Did some unpacking and getting the list of to-dos for the holiday season. Picked up the Christmas postage stamps from the local post office at Parkway and rather like their decorations this year. Looks like the seasonal greetings mail will be late again – it will not be the first nor the last!!!

6 Dec 2015 – Hello December

Tue: safe and sound in HKG and taking the A11 bus (HK$40 S$7+) from the airport into town. My Octopus card is till good to last me this trip. When I was first here years ago, used to wonder how people could live like packed like sardines and now it is happening in SIN!

IMG_7392IMG_7391IMG_7393

Enjoying a simple bowl of yummy wonton noodles at my familiar joint Kings Cafe. Rosedale Hotel  (3nights S$302) located just a few blocks from where I used to stay when visiting and knowing this area makes life easy to be here, tkx to Henry.

Appreciations to Magne for sharing this link and of course it took me much longer time to hike this 16.29k. We started after 1300hrs and did not get back to the road until 2000hrs and that includes 2 breaks.

IMG_7491IMG_7493IMG_7494

Since we were in SaiKung, had to show Magne all the seafood places.

5 Dec 2015 – Tokyo

newsletter_20130918_higashi_003

Sun: interesting late evening stroll thru’ the charming old geisha district here in Kanazawa. Of course most of the buildings are new and did not see a single geisha. With most locations closed and in the dark, difficult to capture pix.

IMG_7271IMG_7269IMG_7270

Checking out the interesting night scene at the Kanazawa station as it seems like it is the main attraction with a huge mall there. PP bought nice leather bag there. Also must be the most well-stocked railway station with brochures, flyers, maps etc for visitors at the info desk!

IMG_7288IMG_7283

Mon: to catch our trains and here is where one monkey heads to Osaka an the other two to Tokyo. Thus ending 2015’s 3Monkees annual get-together. PP & I took off at 0921hrs and arr Tokyo 12.28hrs. Like that trains in Japan are on-time to the exact minute.

IMG_7304IMG_7307IMG_7309

En route to Tokyo by train and our longest single journey for this trip – just app 3hrs.

IMG_7315IMG_7321IMG_7334

PP stayed at the Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa and kindly shared the shower and an extra bed for a short nap…

IMG_7320IMG_7328IMG_7329IMG_7331

Thank you Yoshie for showing us around for the afternoon

IMG_7339IMG_7345

Like the angle and lights of this building as we were crossing the road at Ueno to catch the subway.

IMG_7350IMG_7354IMG_7357

Tue: up dark and early to catch the 0330hrs bus JPY1,030 S$12 and only passenger from Skinagawa Goo (next to Grand Prince) to Tokyo International Airport Haneda.  The holiday decorations and  outdoor observation deck is lovely, especially when it is so peaceful and quiet, being the one person outdoors!

IMG_7373IMG_7368

Feeling blessed and fortunate to view Mt Fuji en route to HKG. Having 3 seats to myself, managed to lay flat to nap on this HK Express flight 3+hrs S$195.

Reflections on Japan:

Would certainly like to return another time. The people there are most civilized, courteous and gracious, places are clean, trains and buses on time; only wish that I could speak some Japanese but that did not stop me from enjoying this trip thoroughly.

IMG_6979IMG_7261IMG_7310

Random weddings caught on my camera – such breath-taking grace and beauty.

IMG_6792IMG_7129 index

Appreciations to KK, a seasoned Japan-traveler who arranged this wonderful itinerary with a variety of different accommodations to let us experience this adventure. Thank you.

IMG_6903IMG_6935IMG_7084

Foods were beautifully presented and delicious.

IMG_7189IMG_7088

The company and views are in no need for words…

Edited with reflections –

PP – I was most ill prepared for this trip having been very busy at work and not having time to look at the schedule organised most beautifully for us.  Will now read the travel book to catch up on the trip.

Thanks to the itinerary, we were able sample the different Japanese lifestyles and their different cuisines – this could also be known as the culinary tour of Japan – I have eaten my way through the 9 days in Japan.  This is my second trip to Japan the first was back in the early 90’s.  I have observed much less smoking in Japan – yeah!!!!  The people are even taller than before.  But they are all just as polite as before.

Having lived overseas most of my life I am not as delicate in my movements. As most of their dwellings are smaller than what I am used to, I feel like a wrecking ball inside the house.  I only took out one paper screen but managed to repair the screen.

The toilets are amazingly high tech.  It senses your presence and turns on the exhaust fan, keeps your bottoms warmed with warm and on occasion hot seat.  Where the flush is located is a game of hide and seek!

Thank goodness for JR railpass.  Having messed up one sector of our trip we were able to obtain tickets with no extra charges.  The same pass also worked on the subway lines run by JR.  Well worth the cost.

Would I go back?   Absolutely!!  May have to work on my knees – may be more weight loss will help.

Wonderful memories of a great Japan adventure from the two ‘old geishas’.

2. It was a novel experience for me to travel in Japan in the company of two ‘old geishas’. But instead of looking after me, they argued with me! Next time I will know better.

Having had the good luck to visit Japan quite a few times in recent years, in the company of friends who know the country well, gave me confidence to organise this trip. Although my travelling companions were at times argumentative, they were most sympathetic when I stupidly dropped my wallet (later found and retrieved from the police post).

Apart from sightseeing, eating, and trying to keep warm, all three of us spent a significant amount of time having senior moments (‘Now where did I put that……?’). I will not divulge who won this game.

4 Dec 2015 – Kanazawa

IMG_7107IMG_7105IMG_7110

Sat: arrived Kanazawa in the dark and the rains. After leaving our baggage in the house, headed straight to Hakuza the gold-leaf shop to brighten the evening 🙂 Presently, Kanazawa produces 99% of domestic gold leaf. Was JPY10,000 S$117 poorer when we left the shop!

IMG_7122IMG_7115IMG_7123

Dinner at Plat Home***pub food with the best tasting roast chicken and a good roast pork, moist, tender and pink. JPY4,900 S$57

IMG_7136IMG_7137

IMG_7131IMG_7129IMG_7133IMG_7130

Sun: woke to clearing sky and a cool morning to discover the charming accommodations and area we are located in. 2nights for S$250 including cleaning charges. Delightful walks and also a day pass on the Green Loop Bus was a good decision. JPY200 S$2.50

Amazing Kenrokuen Garden (FOC for seniors) and strange to see so many trees with their branches tied either to support or to manipulate their growth or both? The Seisonkaku (成巽閣) is one of the few buildings in Japan to display the possessions of a daimyo family in their original surroundings.

with a fascinating swimming pool in one of the courtyards. When viewed from the deck, the pool appears to be filled with deep, shimmering water. In fact, however, a layer of water only some 10cm deep is suspended over transparent glass. Below the glass is an empty space with aquamarine walls that viewers can enter.

The work sets up an unfolding sequence of experiences, from our astonishment at peering down and finding people under the water to our gazing upward from the interior of the pool. While undermining our everyday assumptions about what we think to be obvious, the work invites our active involvement in its spaces—once we catch on to its deception—and produces a sense of connection between people looking at each other.

Dinner at Aoi Sushi***Had a whole snow-crab to celebrate JohnW’s Bday. The other 2 had sushi and sashimi but I have to be more careful with raw foods after the KCH food poisoning a few years ago.

Total bill dinner JPY28,750 S$336 for 3 and I ate a whole crab!!

2 Dec  2015 – Miyajima

IMG_6801IMG_6809IMG_6804
Thu: sweet farewells to Yoshime with exchange of contacts and thank you for her gracious hospitality at her lovely farm-house.

IMG_6853IMG_6855IMG_6854

Ayabe train station on a grey wet day to catch our trains to connect us to the ferry to Miyajima=Shrine Island in Japanese. Had to back-track to a few stations before we got to Miyajima.

IMG_6860IMG_6861IMG_6864

10mins on a car ferry ride in calm waters across with the clearing weathers to the island of Miyajima. The famous Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社) became a reality in the low tides.

IMG_6933IMG_6936

IMG_6869IMG_6870IMG_6874

Checked into the Miyajima Seaside Hotel, a room with a view and a private dinner served. Explored the area to discover that the oyster and scallop shells are seemingly used for land-fill.

IMG_6911IMG_6916IMG_6918IMG_6929

A full-moon evening walk and was glad for my new Brynje meshed Norwegian base layer!

IMG_6937IMG_6938IMG_6942

1night at the Seaside Hotel with dinner and breakfast JPY15,600 S$182

Ropeway (cable-car) and 1k+ walk down & up to Mt Misen (IPY1,800 S$21) on this lovely blue-sky day. Yes there was a fine thin layer of snow on top of the ropeway.

IMG_6944IMG_6952IMG_6953

Are we there yet??

IMG_6959IMG_6960IMG_6961

Finally on the top of Mount Misen (弥山), the sacred mountain on the sacred island Itsukushima in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima, situated within the World Heritage area of Itsukushima Shrine.

IMG_7058IMG_7043

Senjokaku (千畳閣). The name means ‘1000 Mat Pavilion’ and Gojuto (五重塔), the 5-story pagoda.

IMG_6965IMG_7034IMG_7036IMG_7025

Pix no matter at what angles are never enough for Miyajima! Deers here are too tame for my liking…

IMG_7085IMG_7084IMG_7089

It is oyster season and usually would just eat them raw. Was told that the raw ones are for Jan and now it is for cooked ones, either fried, grilled. Tried a few and was pleased with the taste.

2nd night at another accommodation, Momiji-so ryokan – another lovely experience with gracious and hospitable owners at their guest house. (JPY17,280 S$196 1night including dinner and breakfast).

IMG_6964IMG_7074IMG_7069

We started the day with the lost of a wallet and ended the day with PP & I discovering that our train tickets are not on the correct dates. Thank goodness someone found the wallet and brought it to the police station with everything in tact.

IMG_7098IMG_7100IMG_7103

Fri: PP & I skipped breakfast and went early to catch the first ferry out to the train station and got our tickets changed. Good with our JR Rail Pass, no extra cost. Got off a coupe of stations too early and after a few hiccups we finally managed to be on track to meet at Hiroshima station. The 3monkees happily continued to Kanazawa together 🙂

29 Nov 2015 – Suburbs Of Ayabe

IMG_6781IMG_6763

IMG_6765IMG_6767IMG_6779IMG_6795
Wed: grey skies and a nice stroll around our farm-house accommodations on the outskirts in this small village of Ayabe. I can breath again in this beautiful nature.

IMG_6821IMG_6815

The public hot-bath on the hills app half hour walk or 5mins drive from the farm-house

IMG_6813IMG_6812

They serve a good salad with a good view. Here you pick what you want to eat and they weigh your dish and one pays by the weight (minus the weight of the plate). Best pumpkin tempura I have had.

IMG_6823IMG_6822

Lovely walk back and side-tracked to one of the many shrines where the old stone-stairs were treacherous to climb up and down.

IMG_6834IMG_6835

PP wisely decided against going further after one flight of stairs, while we continued. On our way back, I had to practically go on four down the stairs and one fell, thank goodness, no serious injury and nothing broken! To discover later that there was another safer way there, but it was an experience to climb the old stairways to heaven 🙂

IMG_6754IMG_6852IMG_6847

2 nights of farm-cooking with organic produce from Yoshime’s garden were a treat to the stomach. The first night we got to taste all kinds of home-brew, including shark-sake, not my favourite but was appreciative to have been offered and to have tried.

IMG_6752IMG_6841

Best mackerel sashimi tasted and the Camilla tempura was interesting

Yoshime drove us to catch our half-hour bus ride to connect to the trains. In contrast to our arrival in the dark, we could now see the lovely views of this country-side. Seemed like we were probably the youngest passengers on the bus. Even I stood up for a seemingly older passenger 🙂

Appreciations to a delightful hostess for this highly recommended wonderful farm-stay. 2nights+2breakfast and 2dinners JPY20,000 S$234. We were undercharged and had to tell her the mistake!

We Care Pals

25 Nov 2015 – Marine Parade Residence Committee

IMG_6547IMG_6546
Fri: TGIF – a wonderful weekend to all. SIN is amazing, this was hand-delivered to me this morning by the MPRC because I am a senior and living alone in public housing

Sat: sewing, packing and stressing out – my walking shoes seemed to have gone on holidays without me???

IMG_6551IMG_6554IMG_6558
Sun: got to the airport in time to buy another pair of shoes. Saw a wedding party in T3Basement and asked if they were having a Star Wars Wedding? They were not aware that Star Wars is the theme at present. When I went up to the Departure Hall, there they were! May the Force be with them and with us all. Time and tide wait for no one and I need to ride on the Tiger (RT SIN-HKG-SIN S$265.77)

Change to JetStar in HKG and thank goodness flights were on schedule. Tiger arr 1810hrs and JetStar (OW HKG-KIX S$187) dep  2045hrs, had to go thru’ immigration and recheck in again. Even time for a bowl of wonton mee, expensive and not good!

IMG_6568IMG_6567IMG_6572

Mon: JetStar dep on time arr Osaka 0110hrs. Immigration took nearly 2hrs but no worries as the first train into town was not until 0545hrs. Was not about to take a cab as that would have cost as much as my air ticket. Found 4 seats where I could close my eyes and lay down for a couple of hours. Safe with the police station there.

IMG_6680IMG_6580IMG_6586

First train from KIX into town 05.45hrs (JPY92- S$11). Good to see PP safe and sound checked into the Swissotel 24Floor for 1night (S$175). Nice morning stroll on this Labour Thanksgiving public holiday. The lines for the 0930hrs movies started before 0830hrs.

IMG_6592IMG_6595IMG_6593

Fresh baked goods selling like hot cakes but they was just too much for PP & me. But PP needed her coffee, even when the cup is red 🙂

IMG_6579IMG_6594

IMG_6637IMG_6640IMG_6639IMG_6638

Finally found where to activate our JR Rail Pass (JPY38,880 S$442 for 2weeks) after being sent around 2 other different stations the whole morning! Only a few stations will activate the pass and you will need your passport to do that. Once activate, you can buy your tickets at most stations.

IMG_6597IMG_6599IMG_6601

Osaka Floating Garden and Observatory of Umeda Sky Building (JPY700 S$8+) and the area around it.

IMG_6612IMG_6603IMG_6605

Appreciations to Kazumi Kobayashi (friend of Yoshie Osawa) for her kind help and hospitality as our guide for the day!

IMG_6657IMG_6658IMG_6661

Unforgettable 12 course meal at Fujiya****(JPY15,045 S$157, our most expensive meal in Japan) to start our autumn trip in Japan.

IMG_6684IMG_6687IMG_6690

Tue: train from Osaka to Kyoto (25mins) to meet with #3 and so starts with the 3monkees and their annual get-together and this year to celebrate our 60yrs of friendship 🙂  Delicious lunch at Tousuiro Gion****(JPY2,494 S$30) Kyoto consisting of tofu and veggie.

IMG_6714IMG_6706IMG_6707

IMG_6695IMG_6710IMG_6731IMG_6715

Strolling for an hour+ in Kyoto before catching the train to Ayabe.

Thu:  started early today hoping to get off at some earlier bus stop to walk to MtE. Just as well I did – a fallen tree was blocking Marine Parade Rd at Neptune Court and no traffic would pass by there. Fast-walked to East Coast Rd to take the bus from there instead.

IMG_6536ls

Everything went smoothly after some minor diversions. Was just relief to be on the bus and as we pass by Park Mall, this sign caught my attention! Talk to a Fire Hydrant????? No not about to waste my limited minutes on my mobile. By the time the bus pass by the Thai Embassy, there was a man lying by the gate, hope that he is OK and somebody called for help.

Was in and out of the Geylang Polyclinics within 2hrs. The Marine Parade Polyclinics is under revamp. Was delighted to catch the free shuttle bus from Geylang back to MP. Consultation + 3 different meds for 4mnd – S$0, completely subsidized. Nice to be a senior in SIN 🙂 🙂
