Sun: another beautiful day and the family was at church and later swimming. Time has gone by too quickly. The Sunrise Cactus, pre-bloom, full-bloom and now post-bloom, telling me that it is time to pack and move on. Blessed to have had a family reunion, road-trip, Boston Marathon and glad to see that everybody is well and thriving.

Thank you Linn for a yummy dinner, She-Crab Soup, Meat Loaf and Key-Lime Key at Liberty Tap Room on the Lake**** Excellent choice of location for a sunset dinner and until we meet again, take good care of yourself.

Mon: appreciations to Linn for driving me to the airport before her 0530hrs run. CAE airport is nice, clean and not busy; CAE-PHL-DOH-SIN is the route. It is not often that both layovers at PHL and DOH were only 1+hr. Appreciations to Lock & family, Linn & family, May & family and to US friends for a most memorable family reunion. Safe & sound in SIN after countless of unmemorable meals and movies! 23hrs in flight and 4 airports.

IMG_1761

It is no wonder that SIN has won the best airport award for many years running and really well-deserved. Always grateful to land at Changi Airport after passing thru’ all the others. Not because of being bias but because SIN is the only airport that delays do not bother me and would even choose to be there way ahead of time.

Arrived into SIN on schedule Tue 1930hrs and was wondering why it was not brighter when on the bus. Again thinking it was morning, decided to stand with the luggage as it would be rush-hour when bus 36 hits MP Rd. Took a few minutes to realize that it was evening! That is what aging with the combination of jet-lag does to one 🙂

Week of Activities

4 May 2014 – With the Hall Family

IMG_2805IMG_2807IMG_2808

Tue: after dinner swim with #1&2  in Lake Murray was refreshing. Met with a charming young gentleman Timothy from #451 who jumped from the dock into the lake to show us that it was safe and deep enough (app 9′). He was fishing and I was concerned with fishing hooks around us. Timothy ensured us that he would stay away from us. Seems like we are blessed to avoid the bad weathers which have caused havoc in some of the SE states.

IMG_2829IMG_2841IMG_2845IMG_2851

Thu: picnic with #4&5 in Irmo Community Park and the official opening is on Sat. We decided to try it out before the crowd. Yummy food from Zoe’s Kitchen*** and nice area with well-equipped quality playground at the park surrounded by peaceful nature. Was tempted to try the new junglegym and Linn did..

#1’s Spring concert at CrossRoads Middle School with a cool principal who played the drums with the group. She certainly has improved on the violin and will be traveling to NC this weekend to play and to FL later this month. Did not managed to get L&M playing any music instruments, hope that at least one of the grandchildren will find some joy with an instrument!

IMG_2874IMG_2875IMG_2877

Fri: thank you to Debbie for lunch at O’Charley’s***Visited with her and saw that the peach tree has peaches in L&J’s property where the house at Avalon was burnt. Debbie & Rich live next door there and their kindness and help are most appreciated.

IMG_2894IMG_2893IMG_2890

Fun Fair 2014 for Irmo Elementary School where#2&3 are attending. #1 was helping and #4&5 were enjoying themselves. Held at the CrossRoads Middle School sports’ ground with space to set up the rides and stalls.

IMG_2896IMG_2898IMG_2915

Was not quite up to the loud music. Decided to explore the school grounds to discover some lovely trees planted for shade, a pretty ‘boxelder nymph’ (tkx to Tina for providing the name)and a peaceful sunset.

1185623_10203897830556858_3290694382157166767_nSat: #1 headed off bright and early for her fun day at Carowinds; a 398-acre amusement park on the border between NC & SC, in Charlotte and Fort Mill. She will be playing in the orchestra with the CrossRoads Middle School.

Glad that the school organizes these events. Good experience for them and hopefully a memorable time for these pre-teens.

Linn, #2 and I headed the ‘Crawdaddy Dash’ 5k road race where she was top female at 20.08. Believe it or not, here is a seldom pix of me even though it is my back and my shadow taking pix of the finishing 🙂 Thank you to Alex McDonald who has: http://tourdeblueshoes.com/ ‘race reports from a running freak’ a blog on running.

City Roots, an interesting area with a small airport near the industrial side of CAE. Happy to explore the area before and after the race. Discovered Crimson Clovers and thx Stacy Gibson Goddard for providing the name for these pretty lilac ones, wild phlox. There is much beauty in nature, even when they are considered to be weeds… 🙂 🙂

IMG_2990IMG_2995IMG_2991

Continued to the Rosewood Crawfish Festival and bought L&J a gift for their outdoor patio wall. Needed a long nap after all these activities… 🙂 🙂 🙂

L&J attended a church function in the early evening, and later there will be 6 kids under one roof as #1 is having her friend Tanvi over to slumber. Never a dull moment with the Halls!

Beliefs, Religions & Rituals

1 May 2014 – Happy May Day

Most who know me also know that religions and politics are not part of the blog postings’ agenda. Thoughts and feelings regarding the complications and differences of beliefs, rituals and religions are usually personal and subjective. Unless people can respect, share and learn from the differences, ie objective about personal issues but that  is oxymoron!! So there is no point discussing them until the cows come home!

If one is secure with their beliefs and life-styles, then why is there a need to convince others or even talk about it? For many actions and words do not seem to be in harmony!

1236070_10151978193662371_2637475028406929589_n

‘This is an important reminder, but I do wonder at which point this stopped becoming a ‘common sense’ understanding in multicultural Singapore. The rise of religious fundamentalism and the generally low EQ of certain Singaporeans make for a terrible combination. And the very idea of proselytising in a hospital environment, where people are at their most vulnerable and struggling with their mortality, is distasteful and offensive. It turns doves bearing ‘good news’ into predatory creatures, eager to chalk up a quota of saved’ souls’ – Alfian Sa’at

Whatever that helps to make one a kind and loving being, then a reminder is good to have as long as there are no ulterior motives…

‘The only person that save you is you. The others can spend all the effort in helping but will be worthless if the person persistently continues to live in sadness and refuse to get out of the circle’ – appreciations to Wendy for translation.

Common sense is not so common and logic loses its meaning where blind faith and fanatics are concerned.

What my parents taught and brought me up are that beliefs and religions were not the main issues as long as you do not harm and hurt others and yourself intentionally. Mother and her father ie maternal grandfather who was a Baptist minister were staunch Christians but she did not try to convert me. Father who was a man of few words did not interfere nor took part in mother’s faith. With such backgrounds and the following influences…
  • grew up in a household with a matriarch grandmother who was practising some form of Chinese Asian beliefs, mother a god-fearing and church goer and father who did not seem to take part in any of those rituals.
  • attended a Catholic Convent in SIN until age 15
  • Ireland for schooling the next 10yrs
  • another 10yrs with the trolls in Norway, those who have seen Frozen can understand 🙂
  • USA for 15yrs

Calm and Idyllic

30 Apr 2014 – Before the Storm and the Snakes…

Sun: family was at church and decided to clear the girls’ room. They will now be #1-6 so that I am addressing the correct grandchild. Their names get me calling most of the names before the correct one… 🙂

Mon: Linn got rear-ended at the pre-school car line and thank goodness no injuries to anybody. What a start to this week!

IMG_2782IMG_2781

Tue: took 2 days to clear, washed and put away everything on the floor in the girls’ room. The question is how long can it stay this way?? Did not take a before pix to spare them but there was NO space to place a foot on anywhere without stepping on some clothes or things! Have threatened #1 & 2 that US$1 will be fined if any of their clothes or things are on the floor and for #4 that it will be given away…

IMG_2801IMG_2803

The boys’ room is usually cleaned and organised. #3 is amazing and has been awarded his requested prize/Ogre. Only because of the age of #5, a little help is necessary…

IMG_2766RL001IMG_2785

Not just a good runner and a straight A student, just look at this impressive Rubber Band Rainbow Loom bracelet made by #2 for me. More or less up-to-date with the grandchildren’s latest gadgets and toys… 🙂 🙂

IMG_2786IMG_2797IMG_2798

IMG_2790IMG_2794IMG_2789

Enjoying the morning on this humid garbage-day before the predicted rains hit. Seems like the neighbour’s cat know how to avoid the new toy 🙂 🙂 🙂 While loading these pix, can sooo relate and understand #6 saying ‘I want to be at tante Linn’s’ during the road trip!!

Only in the US that I know of about mail getting delivered and also picking up of stamped-mail from the home mail-box. Like the idea of saving a trip to the post office or mail box.

snake2904eWhat is this about snakes? The SNAKE year is over!! About 2+ weeks ago there was a snake in L&J’s garage that freaked me out. Leonard posted a pix of another snake in his path followed by Francisco, Michelle and a friend of Dee within the past couple of weeks. Are these snakes trying to tell us about more climate changes? Camping and hiking are not in the 2014 schedule…

Edited 15 May 2014: three more sightings, two in SC, USA. The Copperhead with out a head is a poisonous one. It bit the family’s dog and thank goodness the dog is OK after a night at the emergency vet. One from Denise, Brisbane, Australia that got into her place. Tkx for the share, Linn, Joyce and Denise.

Back to Routines

27 Apr 2014 – After One+ Crazy Week

IMG_2683IMG_2684

Wed: kids back to school after missing 2days and catch up time is no fun! Just as well they are such smart kids! Was in a daze all day and fell asleep before 20hrs without changing to PJ or brushing teeth. Got up the next morning after 10hrs of sleep to realize that the lights were still on – must have been really exhausted. Happy to see the Sunrise Cactus’s blooms welcoming us back.

irmoIMG_26850d531f7ec9994a71ac6cc4e8c2668f1c

Thu: had to get some works done on the blood and this LabCorp in Irmo must be the most efficient lab. Was lucky enough to be in and out within 10mins. If you have to go to any Post Office here, this branch on  St Andrew’s Road by the Little Caesar’s Pizza is the post office to be. No lines and the best service with a smile 🙂

IMG_2689IMG_2686IMG_2688

Fri: got out of the way for the cleaning helper and had breakfast in town. Millwood Coffee Co*** An omelette there is large enough to keep you stuffed for a whole day if you do not doggy-bag! Interesting place with art displays. Good recommendations, Linn and nice to have some quiet time with my first-born.

IMG_2692IMG_2698IMG_2707

Lovely afternoon down by the lake with James enjoying the attention while his older siblings are at school. Just relaxing in such peaceful surroundings.

IMG_2726IMG_2744IMG_2762

Sat: on the road bright and early for Linn & Ellie’s road race in town. An absolutely beautiful day and a record crowd for the 13th annual Providence Heart & Sole Women’s Five Miler!  More than 2,300 females from SC and neighbouring states registered for this event that raises awareness about heart disease in women. Starting and finishing by Finlay Park

IMG_2736IMG_2737IMG_2738

Ellie was running non-competitive 3mi with her school, Irmo Elementary and she was the 1st in for her school at under 32mins. Linn got 2nd prize in her age group for the 5mi at 33:58 her PR. Way to go mother and daughter. Not easy trying to cheer and get pix of them finishing so close in times. Well-deserved red roses and chocolate covered strawberries at the end of the race… 🙂 🙂

Thank you Shannon&Mark for the hospitality in their idyllic home with beers from here, there and everywhere. Not a beer drinker but tried a sip of them all and the Belgium Saison Dupont is good for more than a sip! Congratulations to Shannon who placed 1st for her age group. Appreciations to all who were there to support this race.

Road Trip/3

24 Apr 2014 – Boston Marathon

IMG_2478IMG_2474IMG_2477 IMG_2484IMG_2485

Sun: Happy Easter! After a good night sleep and breakfast with May & family and Rich at Whole Food, it was nice to see Olai enjoying the playgrounds on this beautiful spring day. The rest of the group was at church.

IMG_2518IMG_2515IMG_2526

IMG_2506IMG_2508IMG_2539

While the rest of the group went sight-seeing , I accompanied Linn to pick up her race package at the Convention Center where it was efficiently managed in spite of the crowds. Many streets around the finishing line was closed and it was nice to walk in the area with a lovely blue sky.

IMG_2576IMG_2566

IMG_2554IMG_2569IMG_2565

A dinner to remember for James & Olai’s first encounter with Teppanyaki at Bisuteki/Cambridge***Also my only chance to get a family pix. Brought back memories of Hanne’s (L&M’s Norwegian cousin)  Bday when she joined us for Linn&Jeff’s wedding. It was her first Teppanyaki meal too but then she was a teenager then and the meal had made an impression on her.

IMG_2583IMG_2590IMG_2587

IMG_2615IMG_2622IMG_2609

Mon: the hotel shuttle got us to the Marriot nearer town and still had to walk to the meeting places to as close as we are allowed near the finish line. Not an easy task to have 6 kids+4adults making sure we do not get separated in such crowds, but it was all worth the while to see the 2 youngest ones on Family Quack…

The drive was a pleasant one with lovely Red Bud blooms, first time seeing them and they have become my favourite at present! Safe and sound back in CAE/SC after 15+hrs drive thru’ MA-NY-CT-NJ-PA-WV-VA-NC-SC – one overnight stop in PA with 5 grandchildren and 1 son-in-law. Amazing father and kids. Good memories of the AT thru’ hike on this drive…

Anyone who really enjoys driving road trips like these with 6 children and then drag them to a crowd of 1mil+ must be totally insane! Amazing what we do for our loved ones!! Took me 29days to hike thru’ VA on the AT/550mi/885km in 2005 and yesterday we drove thru’ it in a few hours. If there is a sane person, I can totally cure her/him 🙂 🙂

IMG_2351IMG_2416IMG_2638

Above pix from DC, Philadelphia/PA and Boston/MA. To rest and to gain back some sanity for a few days before having to think about flying off to SIN 🙂 🙂 🙂

Road Trip/2

20 Apr 2014 – DC-MD-DE-PA-NJ-NY-CT-MA

IMG_2413IMG_2417IMG_2419

Fri: 3hrs drive from DC to PHL/PN. Late start to arrive around 1500hrs to shop at Target. Linn&Jeff & family/5kids is caught up with Gabe&Jen & family/6kids. Good to see Gabe again and the last time we crossed paths must have been in Linn&Jeff’s wedding.

IMG_2437IMG_2439IMG_2438

May, Bjørn, Olai and I spent the night at Hilton. Thank you to the Bouches for offering us a place to stay in their lovely house, but we thought that they have enough on their hands with 11kids. Food at the Hilton was good and there was smoked salmon for the breakfast buffet.

Sat: Linn & family at Independence Hall and Liberty Bell with long lines, according to JeffMay did some shopping at Saks (across the road from Hilton) when it opened at 10.000hrs and we continued our drive by 1030hrs without sight-seeing in PHL/PN. Would take app 5+rs drive from PHL/PN to BOS/MA

IMG_2413IMG_2447IMG_2457

IMG_2458IMG_2459IMG_2465

We drove on by-passing NYC /NY and BDL/CT, stopping by Cabela’s (outfitter’ Store) to do some shopping. Olai enjoyed climbing on the tractors. That smile is worth all the driving and stopping 🙂

IMG_2472IMG_2469IMG_2471

Arriving into BOS/MA before this lovely sunset. Linn & family did not get in until after dark pass 2000hrs. They had experienced heavy traffic thru’ NY. Cindy arrived by air after 2100hrs.

It is rather strange to drive thru’ many of these states that the AT Thru’ hike crossed. App 16hrs drive, 3 overnight stays, we drove thru’ SC-NC-VA-DC-MD-DE-PA-NY-NJ-CT-MA. Minus SC and DC but including TN took me app 80days to hike those states on the AT.

Road Trip

18 Apr 2014 – SC-NC-VA
IMG_2323IMG_2336IMG_2338

Tue: Dee&Terry headed on I-95 back to FL bright and early.  Wet windy last day at Edisto with 2,000pieces of jigsaw! Seeming Inga (May’s room-mate from UF) is a big fan of jigsaw. Good to catch up with Inga who flew from TN to spend a few days with May. The last time we crossed paths was when May was in UF/FL. Now she lives with her mom in TN.

The 24hrs stomach-flu was on-going and poor Olai, the youngest one got it followed by the others. Just no fun and wish it was me instead of the little ones. Linn & family was hit by this a week ago. Seems like Inga, the Jensens and I were spared, so far…

IMG_2339IMG_2341IMG_2346

Wed: packed up to vacate the house by 1000hrs. Said our goodbyes to the Jensens and to Inga. Headed back to CAE to clean up and packed for the road trip to Boston. The flowers have bloomed beautifully in our absence. Olai was just happy to not be in his car-seat enjoying the new John Deer jeep where he could just step on the pedal and he is on his way…

IMG_2347usamapnewimages

Packed and ready to hit the roads in 2 cars again by 1500hrs. Was driving together with May & family and Olai kept saying, ‘I want to go to tante Linn’s house’. A short dinner break at Hardees somewhere in NC, arriving in Washington DC/Days Inn by midnight. The kids are amazing, 8+hrs drive with only a short break.

IMG_2354IMG_2356

IMG_2382IMG_2378IMG_2381

Thu: first time in the US capital on this absolutely beautiful day. For the 6 grandchildren, it is their first time on the US metro. Smithsonian was far too crowded…

IMG_2364IMG_2397IMG_2393

IMG_2399IMG_2362IMG_2355

Fell going to the rest room at Aria Pizzeri. Good pizza but wished that they would not send customers to the downstairs’ restroom if they were not going to turn the lights up. Thank goodness not a serious fall and still in one piece. Decided to return to the hotel to take a bubble-bath and relax.

IMG_2173IMG_2176IMG_2178

Fri: May & family arrived on this beautiful spring day and this is what I have been looking forward to for a long time, to have my whole family together. First time for me and this is what makes my journeys worth the while.

As the only rotating restaurant in SC,  the view that Top of Carolina/18th floor has to offer is delightful. The retro designed and marble floor fittings as you step out of the elevator bringing back some memory from 5 Temengong Rd/SIN. Was trying to capture the sunset with the flag on the CAE State House but the angles are just not with me this round!

The food was OK here. Publix’s chocolate birthday cake was specially ordered by Linn. What was more important is to have family & friends together…

Appreciations to Lock&May/Canada, Dika/Chicago,  AT hikers John/Charleston and Glenda & Franklin/NC for taking time to celebrate with us. Safe journeys to them.

Tue: not easy to drive by the site of the burnt-down house, now completely demolished. The swing is still standing there at the far end of the yard near where Gator was buried. She was the family’s pet dog for 12+yrs. Relieved and happy to see the new house and that the family thrives and are well-settled in this new neighbourhood. Shrimp salad lunch specially for Sophie while the 3 older kids are in school.

The Wisteria blooms are amazing and also the other spring blooms.

With the ‘Strictly Running’ Ladies group where one could bring their own wines and food to a painting class. Did not take part in the painting but watched and had a bite and a glass with them. What an interesting art class at ‘Wine Design’. These ‘Strictly Running’ ladies have proved that they are more than just strictly runners! Here enjoying their wine and snacks while painting 🙂

Wed: good to catch up with Amy and Rachel. The last time I met up with the Jensens was 2yrs ago Aug 2012 in Brussels/Belgium. They have just relocated back to the USA. Katy and Rachel are friends from when they were 3 & 1 (2004 pix credit to AmyJ) and now 14 & 12 (2014). Rachel has grown into a fine pretty young lady, tall and looks much like her father Mike.
