8 Sep 2013 – With 5 Grandchildren Under One Roof!

IMG_7154IMG_7155

Fri: Katy’s first school dance and today’s school dance is not what it was! Jeff was joking about if Katy could do the Waltz or the Limbo and guess if he got the rolling eyes from her 🙂 Free dancing is how my first grandchild describes her first school dance 🙂 🙂

sophiephoto-1

2yrs ago the pink pix was posted when Sophie, #4 grandchild was 2 and had the tendency to fall sleep just anywhere as long as she is tired. Linn & I were searching high and low for her then and finally found her in the laundry basket! 2 yrs later and she is now 4, still sleeps anywhere when she is tired. Too big for the laundry basket but no matter of place or position, here she is asleep during their Fri home movie night, for real, but then her dad can sleep standing 🙂 🙂 🙂

IMG_7160IMG_7157IMG_7156

While the dance was on, took the chance to window shop at Old Navy, TJ Max , Bed Bath & Beyond and Target (all next to each other!) which are on the way to Katy’s dance location and being in the evening not so hot or crowded. HighSierra bag broke down during the UKc2c hike but managed to get it across the pond. Bought a new one at Ross on Tue senior day (10% off), a grey light weight SamsoniteViewpointe with 10yrs warranty for US$63 S$80 minus 10%. Let’s see how long will this one last! The older hard suitcase, a hard Samsonite is still intact in SIN but too heavy to lug around with these limited baggage weight on the budget travels…

IMG_7161IMG_7165

IMG_7170Sat: morning outing with the 4 older grandkids. First to the $Store for them to pick out one item each while I was scouting around for containers for the 3 older and school kids to tidy their stuff on the desk. BubbleTea at the request of all 4. In future, BubbleTea will be for the 2 older ones and something else for the 2 younger ones!

Back to FlightDeck for the afternoon games! This time round, even Superman was not strong enough to help the Gators against Miami. James could not take it and Jeff had to leave with him by half-time; Linn could not handle the last quarter and we took off shortly after James…

Dancing in all its forms cannot be excluded from the curriculum of all noble education; dancing with the feet, with ideas, with words, and, need I add that one must also be able to dance with the pen ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Happy Birthdays

4-5 Sep 2013 – May & Olai

4Sep 1978, second daughter born in the land of the midnight sun and northern lights far above the Arctic Circle in the town of Tromsø, Norway. This is where it is dark all winter and bright all summer. Wonders never cease but actually one of my favourite places in Norway where we lived for 5 years from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Getting sentimental with an adorable pix of May when she was the age her son Olai is now! Check out the resemblance… Happy 35th Birthday to May!

aurora-seeing-at-tromso-norway-8Bryggen1

This was and still is actually the view from the house in Tromsø (Kvamstykket 4), where we used lived in. Except that the house was recently torn down!

Today Tromsø city is the seventh largest city in Norway by pop, 69,116. It is the largest city and the largest urban area in Northern Norway. Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the small island of Tromsøya in the county of Troms, 350 km 217mi north of the Arctic Circle. Substantial parts of the urban area are also situated on the mainland to the east, and on parts of Kvaløya—a large island to the west.

Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.

5Sep 2011: the birth of youngest grandson Olai in Oslo, Norway. He soooo looks like his mom at the same age, just as adorable but with darker hair. Wish I could be there to see his face when he gets his gift from his parents. This would be the cake for him if I were in Norway now. Happy Happy 2nd Birthday to Olai.

USA & Canada Labor Day

3 Sep 2013 – Why in Sep and not 1May

For many countries (more than 80 world wide), Labour Day’ is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1May. It is a celebration of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

In USA  and Canada it is celebrated the first Monday in Sep.

Labor_Day_New_York_1882KOLseal

In the USA, this day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in NYC. After the Haymarket Massacre, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on 1May could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in Sep to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

Labor Day has come to be celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable to wear white.

Mon: swimming at Murraywood Swim & Racquet Club app 10mins drive from the house. Today is the last day at this pool as it will be closed tomorrow and that officially ends this summer, even though the weather is otherwise!!

IMG_7105IMG_7108

Katy & Ellie are good swimmers, enjoying today’s water in their own time. Both in the school swim teams and doing great jobs in competitive swimming.

IMG_7109IMG_7139

Sophie, JohnW and James are like fish in the water and good to see them feeling so at home in the pool.

IMG_7141IMG_7142

IMG_7143IMG_7145IMG_7144

Of course no Labor Day is complete without a cook-out. Delicious grilled corn on the cob, bourbon salmon and ending with s’mores in the backyard. OK, now let the cooler weather fall in…

1 Sep 2013 – Football Season

Has it really been a year ago since travels to France, Belgium, Norway, Canada and USA all took place within one month, mid Aug-mid Sep 2012?

Aug 2013 with 23 postings and the only time more than 23 postings was May 2011, with 24 postings. Then it was in just Norway when the house was getting ready to sell!

Wed: Sophie’s 1st day at her class of 4yrs group and have been told not just by family that ‘she is splitting image of grandma Amy’! When the hair turns all white, maybe can colour that blond and then there might be some resemblances 🙂 Thank goodness it is just the image. Sophie is a well-behave child, unlike her grandma 🙂 🙂

IMG_7090IMG_7092

Fri: with the other 3 in school and Sophie with in her 4yrs group class., took James to McD in the morning, best time to be there when all the kids are in school and the playground just to us. He was wagging like a dog having the full attention from his mom and grandma, not easy to be the youngest in a family of 5, and he is only 2yrs young! Hahaha talking thru’ experience being the youngest in a family of 7!!!!!!!

IMG_7096IMG_7095IMG_7101

Sat: college football and this year a change of location from Carolina Wing & Rib House which closed down. Superman with JellyBelly machines have taken over at Flight Deck in Lexington; a good place for the family where kids can enjoy the games in the arcade while the parents can watch the game. Service was a wee bit slow due to the crowd, to be expected but it was service with a smile. Jeff had to leave early as James had no patience for any games 🙂 🙂 🙂

Shared the table with a nice couple, who also like the outdoor life. Gerine & Bob, hope that you will try to be in SIN someday, if not for work, maybe for a visit!

Somehow this pix was posted in the FB News Feed, taken by Jamie O’Connell on 14Apr 2012 at 1815hrs near Fort William, Scotland/UK. 888,435 people liked it; 147,608 shared it. Even if the pix has been photoshopped, it is still a cool pix and a sign and inspiration for me to search for some of my favourite cloud pix to share.

When no words can replace these wonderful blessed feelings of being together with the children and grandchildren, then these cloud pix will do the job for today. Appreciations to those who shared their cloud pix. Thank you for enjoying the beautiful clouds in its natural form and remember that there is no single one alike and every cloud has a silver lining, just like us humans!

A glorious weekend to y’all

Look up! What is that apparition of dazzling brightness rising softly upon the blue sky from behind those tall and massive elms? If you saw it for the first time in your life, you would say it must be some celestial visitant. Is it light itself from heaven taking shape, and just softened and subdued to the endurance of a mortal vision? It is nothing but a cloud!—mere vapour that the unseen wind moves and moulds, and that the sun shines on for a little time. ~William Smith

Tue: appreciations to May&Lock for all their gracious hospitality in Canada & the US. Hope that they will visit SIN in Nov. Safe & sound here in CAE/SC after 8+hours, 4 airports and two 1+hrs layovers at DTW&ATL. CIU-DTW (45mins flying time) DTW-ATL (1hr30mins) ATL-CAE (40mins). The consequences when flying from an airport with one convey or baggage claim belt to another airport with 3 conveyor baggage claim belts and using Skymiles!! US$5 for handling fees and US$25 for check-in luggage.

CAE-airport with rocking chairs (pix taken some years ago and looks exactly the same today) for grandmothers…. 🙂 Tkx to Linn for meeting me at the airport and by the time we pull into the garage it was way pass 21hrs. Katy and Ellie were still awake to give me the long awaited hugs. CAE/SC USA is another place over-blogged, being here yearly since 2004.

Wed: got the hugs from Sophie and James early morning. Happy to see them all and growing so fast. Only one diaper kid, the 2yrs baby James! Ellie & John were telling me about their art class and Dale Chihuly was mentioned. Sophie who was drawing beside her siblings said ‘I don’t know what y’all are talking about’. Decided to google and show her some of Chihuly’s work and glad to hear the wows as he is also one of my favourite glass artists. Took a trip specially to Seattle WA some years ago to see some of his works.

Katy came home from tennis all red and hot. Tying to get them all together to take a family pix during weekdays is as easy as catching a fly with a pair of chopsticks, but with at least a month here, the opportunity will be there. In the meanwhile this download from Linn’s Jul album will have to do until another posting 🙂 🙂

Right kneel was giving some problems, conclusion Gluscosamine does help! Stopped taking them after the hike to give the body a break, so now will get back on them to see the results by next week!

Sun: this place is not your usual tacky gift shop. Was delighted to find a quality gift shop where many of the things are hand-made and made with what is considered good taste! Was blessed to be given a natural piece of Petoskey Stone when we stopped by Lake Michigan shoreline in search of these stones  (did not know what to search and asked people) on our yesterday’s drive.

Today found this flat small polished piece at Indian Hills Gallery in Petoskey for US$6 S$8. The small house by the store is exactly the size house for me 🙂

A Petoskey stone is a rock and a fossil, often pebble-shaped, that is composed of a fossilized coral. The stones were formed as a result of glaciation, in which sheets of ice plucked stones from the bedrock grinding off their rough edges and depositing them in the NE & NW parts of MI. In those same areas of MI, complete fossilized coral colony heads can be found in the source rocks for the Petoskey stones. In 1965, it was named the state stone for MI.

Continuing our sight-seeing south heading towards Traverse City ( largest producer of tart cherries in the US) a place where hotels, inns, lodges etc lined the shoreline! We all agreed that it was too crowded to stop. Above 2 pix downloaded.

IMG_6991IMG_6993

The scenic route by the lake with the different layers of colours in the water is not easy to capture, but is quite hypnotizing. Hopefully the remainder of this tree trunk is a result of old age and not because of making space for road or stores!

IMG_7012Sleeping_Bear_Dune_Aerial_View

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a park covers a 35mi 60km stretch of Lake MI’s E coastline, as well as N and S Manitor Islands.  This N Mi park was established primarily because of its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations, and ancient glacial phenomena. It was FOC to enter the park for us as they were celebrating their 97th anniversary but did not get to shoreline view… another time (shoreline pix downloaded)!

IMG_7046IMG_6979

Appreciations to May for driving 5+hrs drive to and fro and it must have been tiring for her. If life journey takes me this way, will stay at the River Inn at Leland for a few days to check out this interesting area. May’s version of ‘roughing out’ meal when we got back to the condo… 🙂 🙂

Mon: Harbor Springs is known for its historic summer resorts such as Wequetonsing which was founded by Illinois businessmen. Nice, quiet delightful and certainly mega bucks area judging by the boats, galleries and shops.

Sat: 0930hrs continued from SSM/Canada across to International Bridge where there was a line and took nearly 30mins before reaching the border, nice good looking immigration officer in MI on the US side 🙂

IMG_6938IMG_6943IMG_6942

Another interesting experience with the Soo Locks and this time on the US side which are bigger and a more commercialised than for leisure like that on the Canada side. Soo Locks on the US side have a traffic of 11,000+vessels caring up to 90mil tons of cargo annually. From here cargo can be transported thru’ Lake Huron, Erie, Ontario (the Great Lakes including Lake Superior), St Lawrence River and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Amazing engineering and construction with these locks.

IMG_6978IMG_7043IMG_6980

Trout Creek, near Harbour Springs app 2hrs drive from south of SSM, thanks to May&Lock’s for driving and putting me up in their condo. Exploring the area to discover…

IMG_6975IMG_6977

Bay View app 30mins drive south of Trout Creek, where history comes alive in these Gingerbread houses when The Bay View Association of The United Methodist Church, a Chautauqua on Lake MI, is a National Historic Landmark community founded in 1875. It is situated on 337 beautiful, terraced acres in the northwest portion of MI’s Lower Peninsula. Bay View is home to more than 30 public buildings, nearly 450 cottages and two inns. Every summer they offer superb music, worship, lectures and seminars, all open to the public.

Also held the record of the largest cherry pie in the world some years ago. And the black cherry ice-cream here is to die for, usually a chocolate or coffee ice cream fan but seemed to be addicted to the black cherry ice cream the past few days. Linking Lake Superior and Lake Huron

One of Canada’s heritage canals SSM Canal National Historic Site of Canada is maintained and operated by Parks Canada to protect and present the site’s cultural and natural features, as well as to provide a safe navigable channel between Lake Huron and Lake Superior where there was a gaggle of geese. Canadian geese are loud and noisy…

IMG_6910IMG_6885IMG_6895

Locks are designed to raise and lower boats from one water level to another. They were built along with a series of dams to bypass rapids and waterfalls. The recreational lock combines historic and modern technology. The original lock floor discharge valves and value and gate equipment are still being used. The intake valves are electronically controlled while the upper gates operate hydraulically. All equipment is operated from a computer console.

IMG_6892IMG_6894

IMG_6893IMG_6896IMG_6900IMG_6901

It is neat to see the tourist boat coming in from Lake Superior, MI USA into the Canadian SSM lock. Watching the water level of the lock lower at such a speed to be at the level of Lake Heron is quite amazing. One can then understand the power of water and how destructive it can be. Was told by the lockmaster that there is no pump, just gravity.

IMG_6898IMG_6903

Lake Superior Provincial Park

23 Aug 2013 – Agawa Rock

canadaIMG_6845

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes of N America. The lake is bounded by Ontario and Minnesota to the N and W; Wisconsin and Michigan to the S. It is generally considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area (31,700sq mi 82,103sq km, the size of SC) It is the world’s 3rd largest freshwater lake by vol and the largest by vol in N America.

During the Wisconsin glaciation 10,000 years ago, ice-covered the region at a thickness of 1.25mi 2km. The land contours familiar today were carved by the advance and retreat of the ice sheet. The retreat left gravel, sand, clay and boulder deposits. Glacial meltwaters gathered in the Superior basin. Without the immense weight of the ice, the land rebounded and a drainage outlet formed at Sault Ste. Marie, which would become known as St. Mary’s River.

IMG_6882IMG_6875

Lake Superior Provincial Park is one of the largest provincial parks in Ontario, covering about 1,550sq km along the NE shores of Lake Superior between Wawa and SSM.

IMG_6835IMG_6836IMG_6837

App 30mins drive north of SSM, following along the rugged shores of Lake Superior is Chippewa Falls, half way from Sault Ste Marie to Lake Superior Provincial Park…
