Generation Y

5 Oct 2011 – And how to deal with them 🙂

I took my dad to a fair the other day to enjoy the beautiful weather. We decided to grab a bite at a food stall. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colours: green, yellow, orange and blue. My dad kept staring at her. The teenager would look and find him staring every time. When the teenager had enough, she sarcastically asked:

‘What’s the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?’

Knowing my dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response, knowing he would have a good one. And in classic style he did not bat an eye in his response.

‘Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my daughter.’

Columbia/CAE, SC

4 Oct 2011 – A tourist for an hour…

1805, CAE received its first charter as a town. Rail lines that reached the city in the 1840s primarily transported cotton bales which was the lifeblood of the community and the pop of the slaves was 3,300 in 1860. CAE was destroyed by fire while being occupied by Union troops in 1865.

Check out the flag at the State House! with CAE being the state capital, a pop of app 130,000 in an area of 133.8 sq mi/346.5 sq km. CNNMoney.com, US News & World Report named CAE as one of America’s best affordable place to retire! L&J live in Irmo (since 2004), a  CAE suburb, app 30mins drive.

A beautiful sign by a gate, Chamber of Commerce, US District Court, Statue of Matthew Perry jr.

This time round is mainly for James’ baptism and to help out with Linn as Jeff will be away for work. Staying until beginning of Nov. If time and energy permit, will try to visit some places of interest.

SC ex-governor Mark Sandford came to mind while taking pix of the Governor’s Mansion@Arsenal Hill. He gave the AT a bad rep by telling the media that he was hiking the AT when he was actually visiting his mistress in Argentina!

Sun: thanks to Linn for the walk@Finlay Park on a clear blue sky day. It is a big challenge to be a mother of 5, especially with a sick 2yrs old and a 2 months baby to nurse. Hats off to her for being such a wonderful daughter and a good mother. Appreciations to Rick Woodley@Woodley Garden Center for the plant names: Trumpet Vine, Red Fountain Grass and Southern Magnolia.

Climbing Don Juan!

2 Oct 2011 – Fall is finally here…

Congratulations to Katy who did a 5km run in 41mins, way to go Katy! Could not to attend the race as Sophie is still not well and stayed home to keep an eye on the other four kids. She seemed better later and did have some food and was out in the garden for a short while.

L&J planted rose bushes in the back-yard chosen by the kids. They all have wonderful different fragrance and are beautiful with names appropriate to each child: Katy’s Oklahoma/being in OK city, Ellie’s Elizabeth/Ellie middle name, John’s Climbing Don Juan/being a boy, he is more active and Juan is Spanish for John, Sophie’s Angel Face/she certainly has an angelic face. They will still have to pick one for James! They are good at picking out unique rose bush names, wonder what it will be??

Fall is in the air and the ghosts made by Kathy, Ellie and John are up in the trees spoofing in the winds! There are two pumpkins sitting the pouch and waiting to be carved for Halloween. James got to sit in the swing and slept in my arms for a short while. Sat night, we roasted mush-mellows & Linn made hot chocolate for the kids. Poor Sophie is still not her usual self. The three older kids got to stay up until 2130hrs and told stories over the camp fire. Being Sat, they also get to slumber with me!

Indecency! + Pet Peeves!!

30 Sep 2011 – Bye-bye Sep!

Having 2 sick grand daughters (Ellie & Sophie) here is a handful for L&J, especially when there are 3 other kids including a 2 months baby who does not understand and needs to be nursed regularly. When kids are unwell, they are usually more clingy to their parents, so do not know if I am much of a help but do what I can.

Am I missing all these actions in SIN? Oh well maybe just as well as with the fumes from F1 + the haze it is probably be quite intolerable! In addition, SIN has been ranked the ‘second-most peeved country’ out of 16 countries surveyed released by LinkedIn, the professional network with more than 120 million members worldwide. In SIN, a survey of nearly 1,000 professionals revealed the top three office pet peeves to be:

1. People not taking ownership of their actions

2. Dirty common areas (such as a dirty communal microwave or refrigerator)

3. Constant complainers!!!

The advertisement featuring a topless man that is plastered on the Orchard shopfront in SIN of American fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch breaches the local advertising code of decency, said a watchdog

The Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore (ASAS), which made the ruling, has called for the ad – put up after April – to be removed.

But there is a hitch – ASAS has no legal rights to enforce its decision. The picture of a model wearing a pair of low-slung jeans, which spans the entire four-level shopfront, remains on display at the Knightsbridge mall in Orchard Road for now.

Some people who found the ad to be lewd and inappropriate for the prominent location wrote to The Straits Times’ Forum page last month, urging for it to be taken down.

http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_717645.html

Hope that it will still be up when I get back to SIN. Imagine a hunk on the entire four-level shopfront in SIN most prestigious shopping district, Orchard Rd! What a feast to the healthy female eyes! LOL. Have a good weekend and enjoy the ad before it is gone 🙂

Caffeinated Spider Web

28 Sep 2011 – Angry Birds & Cookie Monster!

Coffee may prevent depression – women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day are less likely to experience depression, researchers have discovered… the authors believe caffeine in coffee may alter the brain’s chemistry. Decaffeinated coffee did not have the same effect.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15059266

Another article states Coffee Lowers Depression Risk In Older Females… so does that mean these findings are not for younger women and men???  Most humans can drink caffeine relatively safely. However, it is very toxic to some animals, such as birds and dogs. Caffeine can have some weird effects on spiders, as can be seen in the picture below.

Old NASA Spider Web Study Shows Power of Caffeine (businessinsider.com)

The spider on caffeine makes a pretty useless web. Now I wonder how spiders drink coffee???

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/235013.php

Maybe men are like spiders… LOL. According to Richard Yung, coffee makes him hyper, energetic, agitated & irritated… wanna rip drum skins, pull out guitar strings and hammer on piano keys to split strings… arghhhh

Put a smile on your face and enjoy the hump-day y’all=you all as they say here in the South!

Have a few cups of coffee with cookie monster and then share more coffee with the Angry Birds 🙂 🙂 🙂

Fiction is like a spider’s web, attached ever so slightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four corners. Often the attachment is scarcely perceptible – Virginia Woolf

Irmo Elementary School

27 Sep 2011 – School Lunch in Australia 🙂

Irmo Elementary School serves grades K-5 in the School District of Lexington and Richland Counties. It is among the few public elementary schools in SC to receive a distinguished Great Schools Rating of 9 out of 10. The school community has reviewed this school and given it an average rating of 5 out of 5* At present the school is under construction and the kids are in portables.

http://www.greatschools.org/south-carolina/irmo/741-Irmo-Elementary-School/

Today, was given the pleasure to lunch with Katy and Ellie at this school. Have heard much about Katy‘s gifted class teacher Mrs Paddock and it was good to meet her. Katy had explained that time-out in her class is Australia, a brilliant concept to teach young minds about the history of how a land of convicts can be transformed to a fantastic country.

Told Denise, an Australian school teacher friend about it as she has been in time-out most of her life! She is now keen to exchange constructive learnings with the 4th graders here in Irmo. How wonderful when gifted teachers like Mrs Paddock & Denise can exchange time-out places. Maybe the time-out for Denise’s class can be with the Cherokee Indians 🙂 🙂

A Baptism

26 Sep 2011 – James Magnus HALL

Sun: James was baptized at Faith Presbyterian Church, 1811 Dutch Fork Road, Ballentine by Pastor Karl McAllister. James was happily wide awake until the pastor carried him, then he fell asleep! The Hall family and close relatives occupied an entire pew with a full congregation during service! Except for Katy, baptized in 2002 in St Stephen’s Lutheran Church, the same church where L&J got married in Orlando/FL, the other 4 grandchildren are all baptized in FPC here in SC.

Appreciations to L&J for hosting a lovely luncheon at home packing the house with families and kids. Jeff gave a good speech as to how James Magnus got his name! Everyone seemed to have had a good time and it was nice to catch up with Rich, L&M’s stepdad. The last time we met was at L&J’s wedding, 14yrs ago!!

38th Okra Strut

25 Sep 2011 – James Baptism Day

Okra = Lady’s Fingers, ie the edible ones 🙂

Sat: SC’s largest parade started by the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club who was looking for a way to raise money to build a new library. The festival feature rides, festival food, arts & crafts etc. Money raised by the festival is put back into the community through civic and school organizations, scholarships and improvements of public areas.

http://www.irmookrastrut.com/

The ancient Irmese were a farming tribe who lived off okra and there is even an Okra Man in this mini state-fair. Did my donation by buying US$40/S$52 worth of tickets to use for rides and food. Do actually like okra, deep-fried or slimy 🙂

It’s been a while since the last catching up with Jeff’s family, good to see (right to left) Kathleen/Jeff’s maternal auntie, Terry/dad and Dee/stepmom. Kathleen told us how to de-slim okra, by quickly tossing them with tomatoes and vinegar!

So few people eat okra (more radishes are grown in this country) that it never even makes it onto the lists of Top 10 hated foods – Julia Reed

A Senior Moment!

23 Sep 2011 – James is 2 months today!

With six grandchildren one really feels and qualifies to be a SENIOR. Sharing this with other fellow seniors 🙂 🙂 🙂

LOVEMAKING TIPS FOR SENIORS & PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE SUGGESTIONS ARE NOT FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE !!!!!

1. Wear your glasses. Make sure your partner is actually in the bed.

2. Set timer for 3 minutes, in case you doze off in the middle of the act.

3. Set the mood with lighting. (Turn them ALL OFF!)

4. Make sure you put 999 on your speed dial before you begin, in case of heart attack!

5. Write your partner’s name on your hand in case you can’t remember.

6. DO NOT BURN CANDLES. You will need all the oxygen in the room for yourself!

8. Make all the noise you want… the neighbours are deaf too.

9. Do not make any appointments for the next few weeks afterwards, so that your back has time to return to normal!

(This is in BOLD so you can read it successfully!!)

Have a wonderful weekend and will post pix of the grandchildren when I get the chance to take them, ie when not playing with the other 4 grandchildren or carrying and doting on baby James 🙂
